25 OCT 1983 -OPERATION URGENT FURY (GRENADA) #Grenada #UrgentFury #Armyhistory #USArmy After a coup within the People's Revolutionary Government on the small C...aribbean island of Grenada -with suspected Cuban involvement, and about 700 Americans attending medical schools there, the United States launched a hasty invasion, Operation URGENT FURY. At 0500 on 25 Oct 1983, soldiers of the 1st and 2d Battalions (Ranger), 75th Infantry began an airborne operation to secure Point Salinas Airport against anti-aircraft fire. Once on the ground, they removed obstacles People's Revolutionary Army (PRA) and Cuban defenders had placed to block the runway. Assisted by Air Force AC-13O gunships, the Rangers secured the airfield by 0735, neutralized enemy anti-aircraft weapons, and captured many Cubans. Almost simultaneously, a company of the 2d Battalion, 8th Marines landed by helicopter on the east coast and secured Pearls Airport against light resistance. In the meantime, lightly armed Navy Sea Air Land (SEAL) commandos secured the British Governor General, Sir Paul, at his residence in St. George's, but were surrounded by RPA troops with armored vehicles. The SEALs resisted with Navy, Marine and Air Force air support until a force of marines with tanks and amphibious vehicles that landed at Grand Mal Bay linked up with them. The Rangers then moved to evacuate American students and neutralize enemy resistance while two brigades of the 82d Airborne Division arrived to join the fight. Operations continued against decreasing resistance over the next several days as Grenadian civilians welcomed the American troops as liberators. When they were withdrawn on 15 December, nearly 7,000 American military personnel, mostly Army, had served on Grenada at some point, of whom about 2,500 had engaged 1,500 PRA soldiers and 700 armed Cuban defenders in combat. 23 - 25 OCTOBER 1942 - BATTLE FOR HENDERSON FIELD ON GUADALCANAL #WWII #Armyhistory On 13 October 1942 the 164th Infantry, the first Army ground combat unit to ...land on Guadalcanal, came ashore to reinforce the marines and took over a 6,600-yard sector at the east end of the American perimeter. Commanded by Colonel Bryant E. Moore, the 164th had joined the 182d and 132d Infantry Regiments, in addition to artillery, engineer, and other support units, to form a new infantry division named "Americal" on New Caledonia. Until the rest of the Americal Division arrived on Guadalcanal under the command of Major General Alexander M. Patch, the 164th Infantry was attached to the 1st Marine Division. On the night of 23 October, the soldiers of the 164th heard the Japanese begin their attempt to retake the Lunga Point airfield, which had been renamed Henderson Field by the marines. Two nights later the Japanese hit the 164th, charging out of the dark jungles yelling "Banzai," throwing hand grenades, and firing every weapon they could carry. Despite armor, artillery, air, and naval support, the Japanese could achieve no more than temporary breakthroughs at isolated points. The soldiers of the newest American unit on Guadalcanal put up a much stiffer defense than the Japanese expected of a green unit, and with the marines repulsed the enemy with heavy losses while losing 26 killed, 52 wounded, and 4 missing. Once the enemy attack failed, Major General Alexander Vandergrift, commander of the 1st Marine Division, then had four combat experienced infantry regiments manning a secure line, one of them being the Army's 164th Infantry. Quite the line of angry birds! FIVE P-40 Warhawks line the ramp at the 2016 Planes of Fame Air Museum Airshow. Just something about those shark mouths that make... the P-40 look quite menacing! #aviation #aviationphotography #avgeek #pofairshow #p40warhawk #planesoffameairshow #angrybirds #ww2 #worldwar2 #planesoffame #airshow #warbird #canon #photography #instaaviation #canon_photos #history Britt Dietz - http://www.warbird-photos.com Instagram: @warbirdphotos Warbird Photos Aviation Photography by Britt Dietz See more

Hewlett native Joseph Belilos landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France during the D-Day invasion on June 6th, 1944. Joseph was a devoted baseball fan who loved to watch his favorite team, the New York Yankees. He saw both Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth play in person, but he always said that Joe DiMaggio was the best player he ever saw. He attended every World Series game in 1977 and 78, and even predicted Aaron Boone’s game-winning home run against the Boston Red Sox in the 2003 ALCS! Joseph recently passed away on September 24th at the age of 95. We at Honor Flight Long Island honor his service and salute those who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War Two. Thank you, sir!

10 OCTOBER 1951 - HEART BREAK RIDGE (Main Effort Commenced) - #KoreanWar #Armyhistory #USArmy #OTD After United Nations forces took possession of Bloody Ridge, ...Communist North Korean and Chinese units retreated to establish another defense line just one mile to the north to halt further U.N. advances. The communists entrenched themselves on the seven-mile stretch of land that included three sharp peaks, separated by steep valleys, just north of the 38th Parallel - which had been the pre-war boundary between North and South Korea. The U.S. Army's 2d Infantry Division, with an attached French battalion and supported by South Korean and Dutch units, began a series of costly piecemeal assaults on 13 September. Unable to capture and hold the high ground, American G.I.'s soon named it "Heartbreak Ridge," and their French comrades called it "Crèvecœur." On 10 October the entire 2d Infantry Division massed for a renewed main effort that began the next day. American armored units penetrated behind the main defenses to disrupt communist logistics and reinforcements, which better enabled the American and French infantrymen to eliminate the last pockets of resistance on the high ground by 13 October. The newly established defensive positions successfully repulsed repeated and determined enemy counterattacks that continued until the 1953 armistice.
