Why is the lush, grass-green peridot an extreme gem? It can be found in volcanic rocks and meteorites! It often forms in the mantle of the earth and reaches the... surface when shot out by volcanoes as xenolith bombs. These bombs (image 2) (chunks of peridot coated in volcanic basalt rock) can be found near the craters of a select few volcanoes, one of which is the Kilbourne Hole in New Mexico (image 3). Peridot has also been discovered in outer space! The crews of Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 found peridot on the moon, and peridot was found in comet dust brought back by the Stardust robotic space probe in 2005. What a stellar gem! Diamonds didn't become the hardest gem on the block by taking it easy. Natural diamonds formed 90 to 400 miles beneath Earth's surface in temperatures of more t...han 2000F (1050C), under pressures equivalent to more than 80 elephants stepping on your big toe. And that was just the beginning! Then they were explosively carried up to Earth’s surface by special volcanoes called kimberlites. Not every diamond survives this process since the kimberlite magma can dissolve diamonds. The next time you look at a diamond, know that you're looking at a survivor! Courtesy (diamonds): Blue Nile.
