Orion Is Fearless! But we can't take all the credit. Sure, he's been through Extreme Skillz, Elite Skillz, and serves on our peer leadership team, but Orion is a product of his entire upbringing. No matter how awesome we are at empowering your children to succeed, we can never replace your impact as parents... and we don't want to! :)... It does take a village to raise a child, and we are proud to be a part of that community, but it is on the foundations you lay at home that we build the next layer. Sibling Rivalry Is Inevitable, Right? Yes, and it actually serves many positive purposes. However, a healthy balance of Sibling harmony is also important. When siblings fight, there are many factors at play: power, attention, communication challenges, stage of development, & more.... So how can we foster that harmony? While every situation is unique, here are a few quick tips that might help: 1 - Provide Them Space: Even if it's part-time, children sometimes need their own space to retreat to. This can be their own bedroom, a big box, or even a spot in the back yard. Life can be overwhelming, especially when your siblings are ALWAYS around. Having some private space or time can help de-escalate powerful emotions. Make this a positive choice, not a punishment. 2 - Provide Personal Attention: It is easy for older siblings to feel jealous of the attention that younger siblings receive. It is hard for younger siblings to understand why mom & dad aren't paying attention to them. By spending one-on-one time doing something special, each child will feel connected and heard. 3 - Prompt Positive Interactions: While sibling rivalry can help kids learn about social interactions and personal boundaries, it is important for adults to help kids learn about positive ways to interact. An older sibling can be praised for being a great role model. A younger sibling can be nurtured to more closely model an elder child's behavior. Both can be taught about the power of teamwork while engaged in mutual activities. 4 - Keep Your Cool: Parenting isn't always easy, and with multiple children, it can really present a challenge. Remember that kids ultimately take their cues from what they observe their parents doing. Remember to take a breath when you feel stressed before trying to deal with sticky sibling situations. When you are cool, calm, and collected, they will feed off your energy. It may take some time, but your kids will learn that peace is positive. . www.SkillzOfPatchogue.com . . #SiblingRivalry #Parenting #ParentingTips #Breathe #ChildDevelopment #GotSkillz #SkillzOfPatchogue #4GK #4GKmartialarts #Patchogue #Medford #MedfordNY #Bellport #EastPatchogue

Are you worried about how your child responds to negative peer pressure? By helping them have a strong sense of Vision, you help them see how each decision they make will affect their progress. One of the ways we can start this early is by using labeled praise.... Normally, parents expect that their kids will behave, and only provide feedback when they see something amiss. While this is certainly important, it is equally important to mindfully find ways to "catch them" being good. Then, even if it's only for a brief moment, help them recognize the positive behaviors by labeling what you saw. If possible, use the praise to help them identify the positive character traits associated with the positive behavior. For example, if they push their glass back from the edge of the table to avoid spilling their drink, praise them by saying something specific, like, "I love that you pushed the glass back. That shows me that you are a person who is very responsible." This helps them create an image of themselves that includes, "Responsibility" in their self-definition. It is very hard for a person to violate their own self-image, their Vision of themselves. Thus, when they are later faced with a decision presented by their peers, they will be more likely to choose a more positive outcome. Couple this with talking about their hopes and dreams, and helping them see their future selves as powerful, successful, and REAL, and you create a child who is not so easily influenced because they are too busy being AWESOME! . www.SkillzOfPatchogue.com . . #Vision #DecisionMaking #LabeledPraise #Responsibility #PeerPressure #ChildDevelopment #SkillzOfPatchogue #GotSkillz #4GK #4GKmartialarts #Patchogue #Medford #MedfordNY #Bellport #EastPatchogue #SuffolkCounty #MindfulParenting

Success Means Different things To Different Kids! Children need to feel successful in order to help develop an empowered and positive self-image. While many activities can help kids feel competent, our goal at Skillz is to provide children with the tools to carry competence and self-efficacy into every new challenge. Nicholas and Andrew are both members of our Core Skillz program.... Nicholas uses the skills he learns in class to enhance his Agility, Speed, and Perseverance on the soccer field. Andrew uses his skills to explore new Techniques, build Courage on new adventures, and enhance Concentration during activities as a scout. When you give kids the tools they need to thrive physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally, you give them the means to find success in whatever venue they feel is important to them. That is what Skillz Child Development training is all about . www.SkillzOfPatchogue.com . . #ChildDevelopment #Soccer #Scouts #Success #SkillzOfPatchogue #GotSkillz #4GK #4GKmartialarts #Patchogue #Medford #MedfordNY #Bellport #Courage #Speed #Agility #Technique #CoreSkillz #Concentration #Perseverance #SuffolkCountyNicholas
