Did you know that the top of the Empire State Building was meant to have a transportation hub? On this date, back in 1929, New York Governor Al Smith announced that a mooring mast for dirigibles was to be built atop the Empire State Building. After the mast was constructed in 1931, the first dirigible to land on the building was blown over by the wind and nearly swept away bystanders. ... Two weeks later, a Goodyear blimp dropped a stack of newspapers on the roof a part of a publicity stunt, but the airship plan was abandoned shortly thereafter. A broadcast tower ended up replacing the mast. ----- Please share this moment in time

The creative spirit of Christmas is strong in NYC! On this date, back in 1905, O Henry's classic Christmas story "The Gift of the Magi" was published in The New York World newspaper. It was written in just a few hours in a booth inside Pete's Tavern on 18th Street and Irving Place in Manhattan. The tavern and the famous booth are still open to customers today. The story is about a young married couple and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts f...or each other with very little money. It is a powerful sentimental story with a moral lesson about gift-giving. Visualize more: bit.ly/2BSIlBx ----- Please share this moment in time.
Dark day today in NYC History. On this date, back in 1980, English singer, songwriter, and rock music icon John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman outside his residence at the Dakota Apartments in the Upper West Side. The former Beatle called New York his home in his final years. The city honors his memory by having named his favorite section of Central Park after one of his songs: Strawberry Fields.... Chapman was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison, where he remains to this day. To learn more visit here: bit.ly/2LB4Ylr. ----- Please share this moment in time.
