1% Guideline for Your Holiday Budget Although it’s the season for giving, it doesn’t mean you should exceed what you can truly afford. Certified Financial Planners say a good rule of thumb is to spend no more than 1 percent of your total gross income (before taxes) on the holidays. That includes food, travel, gifts, entertainment, and donations. For example, if you earn $50,000 a year, that’s about $500 for your Holiday Budget; $10,000 gross annual income means your Holiday B...udget would be around $100. You can do a lot with that! (If you spend less, excellent!) To help you deal with gift giving, here are some tips: Make a Holiday budget plan (see 1% guideline above). Buy within your means. You don’t have to match what others spend. Think about who you really have to buy gifts for. Did you receive a gift from them last year? You may be putting them on the spot too. Maybe they couldn’t afford a gift and they feel pressure as well. Can you make something or do something as a gift, instead of buying a gift? Give a Coupon- Promise to.Do Something Special Shop with a list of who you have to buy gifts for with the dollar amount you decided next to the person’s name. Do your best to stick to it. Use coupons, look on the store’s website for coupons before and during shopping for pop-up sales. During non-COVID Christmas time next year - Pay with cash only so you stick to your budget. (Keep your money in your front pocket to protect it). Wrap gifts creatively with old wallpaper, newspaper, brown bags, etc. Make name tags out of the same material used. If you need ideas, planning help, or support, feel free to email or call me! Wing, Command Chief Hewson and I wish you, your families and loved ones a wonderful Holiday season. As we enter this season during these unprecedented times, it is important for us to remain safe and vigilant. With extra pre-cautions, health concerns, travel advisories and deployments, many of us will not be able to visit with extended friends and family the way we would like. Just know we remain immensely grateful for the diligence and dedication to duty that you bring t...o the 106 RQW every day throughout the year. We also ask that you please pass along our gratitude to your families and significant others. We recognize that without their love and support, your service in the Wing would not be possible. We especially thank those who are currently deployed, and ask that everyone keep these individuals and their loved ones in your thoughts. Your commitment to the mission and to our nation’s security is greatly valued and appreciated. It is important that we continue to be a good ‘Wingman’ and be there for our fellow Airmen. Remember the vast and professional resources available on Base within the Health and Wellness Center. We should all keep safety in the forefront of our minds to ensure that, together, we can look forward to a New Year full of possibilities. We wish you and your families a happy and safe holiday season! SHAWN FITZGERALD, Colonel, New York Air National Guard Commander, 106th Rescue Wing See more
