Vinylmania was a Manhattan record store set up by Charlie Grappone that was one of the first to start selling records as 12" culture took off. It went on to supply Levan, Tony Humphries and many more and played the key part in disseminating early house music. It's now a revived label putting out some of those early pioneering gems once again, and here it is Man Friday, Levan's own production project, in the spotlight. Kalim Shabazz founded NYC's legendary Afterlife party in 1993 and has since served up soulful grooves in cities around the globe. His production resume dates back to the early ’90s and includes releases on King Street Sounds, Wave Music and Shelter Records. At present, Kalim is working with longtime collaborator Nick Jones on an album of soulful jazzinspired tunes, as well as new solo material that pulls from harder-edged European sounds. He, Bradford James and Monchan all share the ability to give a nod to the past, while keeping their sights set on the future.
