What is the universal sign placed on fabric care tags which indicate a piece of clothing needs to be cared with the dry cleaning process? A plain circle. Sometimes, a P or F may be included in the circle as well.

It's generally not a good idea to remove care labels from your garments, since they specify the methods that are safe to use for cleaning. If you do remove them, some dry cleaners may not be able to clean your clothes per their company policy. Others may require a consent form before proceeding.

The beginning of the dry cleaning industry, as we know it, dates back to the 1840s in Paris. Jean-Baptiste Jolly’s maid inadvertently knocked over a kerosene lamp. The kerosene spilled onto a linen tablecloth, turning the area with the kerosene whiter than the rest of the tablecloth. Jolly soon created the first dry cleaning business in Europe.
