Creating a good design color palette is a HUGE deal in interior designand so many people get hung up on it & let their own indecision prevent them from pulling the trigger & creating rooms they love. And I color (creating palettes is something I literally do in my so I thought I’d share some quick, easy tips on how to develop a foolproof color palette here! 1. What will live in the room? Furniture? Loud upholstery? Artwork? Pulling one or two colors from one of these e...lements is the ticket to making any room look cohesive and profesh. Ballpark the general color, and then go grab some paint chips. Hold up the chips next to that chair, painting, rugwhatever. The color closest to the color you’d like to match will be perfect. (Narrow it down to three colors AT MOST.) 2. What mood do you want to create? Moody AF? Clean and bright? Bold and beautiful? Familiarize yourself with the difference between warm and cool colors. Again, consult your paint chips cards. From lightest to darkest, everything on the sample is in the same color family, and has the same intensity. 3. Contrast! Nothing should be matchy-matchy. Whatever your dominant color (usually the color on the walls), select a range of lighter and darker hues in the same color family. For example, use robin’s egg blue on the wall, icy-white blue on the trim, and navy in decorative items like rugs and so forth. Otherwise, your space will look super-uninspired and too one-note. 4. Test out the colors. Request 8oz sample pots of the colors you chose on the chips, and paint a grid of large squares in each color on the wall and/or large poster or foam-core board. In May of this year, I decided to shutter the vintage shop I’d been running for 2.5 yearsand on July 1st, I was out. It was a bit scary, but not as scary as investing precious time and money in a biz that no longer suits my authentic wants and desires. (Life is short!) Since I ran the shop myselfif you’re thinking of running your own biz I have some choice words of wisdom (but that’s another story)I got exhausted by perpetual administrative duties that increasingly kept me... away from styling, shopping, and generally being the creative person I love to be. I (albeit slowly) realized that running a shop just wasn’t a great fit anymoreand if you know me, you also know I’m not one to waste time doing things I can’t stand. Even though going it alone isn’t exactly something I’m unaccustomed to (I’ve been working for myself since 2011), finally freeing up time to put 100% of my daily efforts (instead of half-assing everything bc there are only 24 hours in a day) into executing interior design projects has been so much more rewarding. -- Now I’m tackling designs like this one I completed for one of my first E-Design clients who’s also one of my BFFs, so that’s always awesome. E-design is basically virtual, or online interior design that’s done completely remotely. -- Remote and face-to-face home design projects are now what I do dailyand what I actually really, really love doing.
