With over 7,000 performances, "Cats" became the longest running Broadway show at the time and currently holds the fourth spot on the list.The original Broadway production created the most theatrical jobs in Broadway's history, generated over $380 million in ticket sales & had an economic impact of over $3 billion on NYC.

The original Broadway run of Rent closed after 12 years on this day in 2008. The Pulitzer & 4X Tony award winning musical grossed over $280 million & is one of Broadway's longest running shows with over 5000 performances. Rent was based on Puccini's opera La Bohème which premiered exactly 100 years before Rent's Broadway premiere. The late Jonathan Larson who sadly passed away before the musical premiered Off-Broadway, incorporated aspects of his own life into the show includ...ing having a bathtub in his kitchen & composed hundreds of songs for Rent which were winnowed down to just 42 for the final production. Rent-heads is the term affectionately used for fans of the musical but originally referred to those so devoted that they would camp out in front of the Nederlander Theatre in the hopes of scoring $20 rush lottery tickets in the first 2 rows. Other Broadway shows have since followed this example offering discount rush tickets to increase accessibility. "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics is #1 in 1983 after debuting at #90 & working it's way up. It was the first single released in the US by the duo & established them on the worldwide stage thanks to the music video getting substantial play on newcomer MTV. Stewart and Lennox had very little money, and were thrilled when a bank gave them a loan to buy some equipment and make a record. "Sweet Dreams" was written on dueling synthesizers played by Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart. The ...record company did not want to release "Sweet Dreams" as a single because it lacked a chorus but relented after the positive response generated in Cleveland by a local radio DJ's repeated plays. "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor is the #1 song in America spending 6 weeks at the top of the charts in 1982. The song was written for the film Rocky III at the behest of Sylvester Stallone after Queen turned down his request to use "Another One Bites The Dust." Co-writers Frankie Sullivan & Jim Peterik considered calling the song "Survival" but thought better of it after realizing the strength of the hook. Woodstock Festival closes with Jimi Hendrix & Band of Gypsys in a 19 song set that began at 9 AM. The festival drew about half a million people but only about 30,000 stayed to see Hendrix perform one of the longest sets in his career at nearly 2 hours including a medley containing The Star-Spangled Banner and Purple Haze. Hendrix was the highest-paid instrumentalist but wasn't the first choice to close Woodstock. That honor would have gone to Roy Rogers had he not decline...d. During the three-day festival, 32 musical acts performed including The Who, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and the Kozmic Blues Band, Jefferson Airplanes, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sly & the Family Stone, and Santana.
