Exploration is curiosity put into action said oceanographer and explorer, Don Walsh. Curiosity and exploration have led us to create some of our best branding work. I think that the most delicious part of the design process is the exploration phase because it’s the magic creative period where ideas are born, evaluated, researched, reviewed, tweaked, scrutinized, improved, finessed, and so on. * * * The initial round of ideas consists of many pencil sketches on pa...per. Then, the ones that we see potential make it to the digital exploration stage. Today’s animated post shows some of the ideas that made it to the second round. * * Creating the brand for female footballer sensation Norma Palafox has been a treat. In the end of a six month design process we landed in a complete branding system that includes a flexible symbol in the form of a shield that represents the athlete’s place of origin; a monogram of the letter N, initial for Norma, that is made of an elegant diagonal line and two stars; and a logotype of the athlete’s last name, Palafox. The three design elements create a very flexible brand that will represent the many facets of Norma: the football player, the businesswoman, the style icon, and the down-to-earth, small town girl who dared to follow her dream. * * #NormaPalafox will be competing in the 5th Season of @exatlonestadosunidos in @Telemundo Premiers tonight at 7 PM. #teamnorma * * * #ExatlonEEUU #athletebranding #palafox #sportsgraphics #branding #soccerbrand #sportslogo #telemundo #designedbyalfalfastudio #winningbrand #soccerbranding #exatlon #sportsdesign #footballer #colortheory #colorinbranding #alfalfanewyork #alfalfastudio #rafaelesquer #graphicdesign #logo #professionalathlete #athlete #soccerplayer #sonorense #jugadora #tuzas See more

With color one obtains an energy that seems to stem from witchcraft. ~Henri Matisse Norma Palafox is one of the most fascinating soccer players today. In getting to know her while designing her athlete’s brand. We uncovered core attributes that have made her into one of the most popular female soccer players in the world. She is real, straight-forward, free-spoken, authentic, tough , and a rebel. So the colors of her brand needed to capture her personality. * *... * Color in branding should never be arbitrary because it communicates at a visceral level. In searching for a unique color palette that would properly represent #NormaPalafox we looked at the psychological power of color, its science, meaning and cultural connotations. In the end, we settled on a limited set of 4 colors. Two being the main ones, while the other two take a more supporting roles. Rojo Sonora (Sonoran red) and Oro miel (golden honey) are the core colors. They represent her place of origin and her tough determination. Red is found in the shield of Huatabampo, her hometown. Red also represents passion, strength and courage. Gold represents respect, the Sonoran Desert and Norma’s big heart. These attributes have carried a young girl from a small town in Sonora to the world’s most important arenas and to the hearts of millions of adoring fans. * * On a side note, as luck would have it, Norma and Rafael Esquer, Alfalfa Studio’s Founder, are both natives of Huatabampo, Sonora but didn’t know each other until this project brought them together. It’s a small world, as they say! Big thanks to @thinkfuera for the introductions! * * #athletebranding #palafox #sportsgraphics #branding #soccerbrand #sportslogo #designedbyalfalfastudio #winningbrand #soccerbranding #exathlon #sportsdesign #footballer #colortheory #colorinbranding #alfalfanewyork #alfalfastudio #rafaelesquer #graphicdesign #logo #professionalathlete #athlete #soccerplayer #sonorense #jugadora #tuzas See more

Fascinating Fact N 15: SUGAR HILL is one of New York City's most historic neighborhoods. Known not only for its Harlem Renaissance history but for its unmatched architecture. Its wide streets and avenues are lined diverse styles including Queen Anne, Romanesque Revival, Renaissance Revival, Beaux-Arts, Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, Gothic Revival, and neo-Grec among others. It’s not surprised that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. * Where does the name... come from? Sugar Hill got its name in the 1920s when the neighborhood became a popular place for wealthy African Americans to live during the Harlem Renaissance. Reflective of the "sweet life" there, Sugar Hill featured rowhouses in which lived such prominent African Americans as W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Walter Francis White, Roy Wilkins and Afro-Puerto Rican Arturo Schomburg. * Enjoy additional fascinating facts: * (1)Remember that house the Tenenbaum clan lived in on "Archer" avenue in #WesAnderson The Royal Tenenbaums? That picturesque mansion is located on the same street as our studio! Yes, Alfalfa Studio is located in Sugar Hill. (2) Sugar Hill has its own beer label presumed to be based on a "closely guarded recipe that originated in Harlem's supper clubs and speakeasies, and has been passed down through the generations." (3) It has a haunted house! Another beloved architectural oddity is the mysterious, castle-like Bailey Mansion, which was built in the 1880s forJames A. Bailey (of Barnum & Bailey fame). Legend has it that it used it as a funeral homehence, rumors of a haunting. (4) The Sugarhill Gang never lived here. * * * Each neighborhood of NYC is unique. BEHIND THE SYMBOL. Successful brands have meaning behind their symbols: The Nike Swoosh represents motion and speed and its shape depicts an arc of movement; The three stripes of Adidas logo represent a mountain, pointing out towards challenges and goals people need to overcome. What is the meaning of the Deyna Castellanos brand? * * * The symbol for #QueenDeyna is made up of three simple shapes: one diamond star, and two half moon shapes. ... The left half-moon shape is an abstraction of the letter D for Deyna while the right one is an abstraction of the letter C for Castellanos. The four-point star symbolizes direction, purpose, and achievement , like the north star, it’s a fixed point that guides Deyna as the world keeps changing. Together, the star and initials create an evocative symbol. it brings to mind expressions of joy a figure jumping. It alludes to leadership a crown for #queendeyna. It captures feelings of optimism, energy, inspiration, and, most of all, winning like Deyna herself. * * * #deynacastellanos #deynabranding #branding #sportsbranding #athletebranding #sportslogo #behindthesymbol #designedbyalfalfastudio #sportscolor #symbol #rafaelesquer #sportsdesign #graphicdesign #logo #sportsgraphics #soccerbranding #soccerdesign #soccergraphicdesign #venezuelaplayer #footballer #femalefootballer #femaleempowerment #logosecrets #atletifemenino #professionalathlete #alfalfanewyork #alfalfastudio #rafaelesquer See more

THE INDISPUTABLE POWER of COLOR. A brand is not a brand without a color. The power of color is that it transcends languages by speaking directly to our senses. Have you ever wondered what the taste of gold is, the smell of purple, or the sound of royal blue? We ask ourselves all of these questions during a branding process. A font, shape, and symbol are not enough to launch a successful brandcolor is as big of a player. Besides the theory of color, when choosing a color pale...tte for a brand, one must keep in mind their psychology, meaning, and cultural connotations. * * Deyna Castellanos has earned the nickname #QueenDeyna because of her exquisite qualities on and off the field. On the field, she plays with elegance, determination, and power. Off the field, she is smart, disciplined, and compassionate. Like a real queen, she is an inspiration to many young women in her native Venezuela and abroad. Our task was to capture all of these qualities in her brand. * * The Deyna Castellanos core color palette is made of 4 colors: Deyna’s gold, regal purple, royal blue, and cream. The gold represents her winning attitude, the regal purple represents her elegance and beauty, the royal blue alludes to her powerful game and determination, and the cream brings to mind her empathy and compassion. * * #queendeyna #deynacastellanos #deynabranding #branding #sportsbranding #athletebranding #sportslogo #designedbyalfalfastudio #sportscolor #colortheory #rafaelesquer #sportsdesign #graphicdesign #logo #sportsgraphics #soccerbranding #soccerdesign #soccergraphicdesign #venezuelaplayer #footballer #femalefootballer #atletifemenino #professionalathlete #alfalfanewyork #alfalfastudio #rafaelesquer See more

ONE OF THE MOST FILMED LOCATIONS in the world. With its unique blend of natural landscape and urban skyline, it’s no surprise that Central Park is one of the most filmed locations in the entire world. In 1908, the original cinematic version of Romeo & Juliet became the first movie to be shot on its grounds. Over the years, countless blockbusters have followed suit, including Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), When Harry Met Sally (1989), The Avengers (2012), Men in Black III (2...011), The Smurfs (2010), Eat Pray Love (2009), Sex in the City (2007),El Cantante (2006), I Am Legend (2006), Night at the Museum (2006), Spiderman 3 (2006), The Devil Wears Prada (2005), 13 Going On 30 (2004),Elf (2003), Daredevil (2002), Maid in Manhattan (2002), The Panic Room (2002), Stuart Little 2 (2002), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001, Serendipity (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001), Almost Famous (2000), Autumn in New York (2000), Cruel Intentions (1999), Stuart Little (1999), Last Days of Disco (1998), You’ve Got Mail (1998), The Devil’s Advocate (1997), Mighty Aphrodite (1995), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993), Home Alone II (1992), The Fisher King (1991), Green Card (1990), Crimes and Misdemenanors (1989), Fatal Attraction (1987), Wall Street (1987), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Desperately Seeking Susan (1984), Ghostbusters (1983), Moscow On the Hudson (1983), Splash (1983), Tootsie (1983), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1983), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), Manhattan (1979), Hair (1979), Annie Hall (1977), Marathon Man (1976), Death Wish (1974), Godspell (1973), Love Story (1970) The Producers (1967), The Manchurian Candidate (1960), and An Affair to Remember (1957) * * * #designedbyalfalfastudio #filmsoncentralpark #centralpark #centralparksculpture #centralparkart #iconiccentralparkmap #iconiccentralparkposter #centralparkartprint #trendycentralparkmap #printforhomewalls #centralparkprint #collectiblecentralpark #centralparkmap #centralparkposter #lovecentralpark #iloveny #newyorkcity #centralparkkeepsake #centralparkmonument #godspell #designgift #coolmap #travelmap See more

TRUE STORY! THERE WAS A CONTEST. This is how Central Park came into being...In June 1856, Fernando Wood appointed a "consulting board" of seven people, headed by author Washington Irving, to inspire public confidence in the proposed development.Wood hired military engineer Egbert Ludovicus Viele as the park's chief engineer, tasking him with a topographical survey of the site. The following April, the state legislature passed a bill to authorize the appointment of four Democr...atic and seven Republican commissioners, who had exclusive control over the planning and construction process. Though Viele had already devised a plan for the park, the commissioners disregarded it and retained him to complete only the topographical surveys. The Central Park Commission began hosting a landscape design contest shortly after its creation. The commission specified that each entry contain extremely detailed specifications, as mandated by the consulting board. Thirty-three firms or organizations submitted plans. In April 1858, the park commissioners selected Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's "Greensward Plan" as the winning design. Three other plans were designated as runners-up and featured in a city exhibit. Unlike many of the other designs, which effectively integrated Central Park with the surrounding city, Olmsted and Vaux's proposal introduced clear separations with four sunken transverse roadways. The plan eschewed symmetry, instead opting for a more picturesque design. It was influenced by the pastoral ideals of landscaped cemeteries such as Mount Auburn in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Green-Wood in Brooklyn. The design was also inspired by Olmsted's 1850 visit to Birkenhead Park in England, which is generally acknowledged as the first publicly funded civil park in the world. According to Olmsted, the park was "of great importance as the first real Park made in this countrya democratic development of the highest significance" * * * Central Park. THE HIGHEST ARCH IN CENTRAL PARK: Located on the hilliest section of Central Park, the Mountcliff Arch was built in 1890. It carries the West 110th Street entrance from Frederick Douglass Circle into the park . At 48 feet high and 102 feet long, this is the park's tallest arch as well as it's northernmost. It is constructed of gneiss in rockface ashlar, just as the 77th Street Stone Bridge (Eaglevale) and Claremont Arch to its south. Like its sisters, Eaglevale and Claremo...nt, Mountcliff Arch was built to accommodate increasing population on the upper east side that wanted access to the park interior. BEST PLACE FOR FOREST BATHING: For New Yorkers, there's an ideal spot for taking a forest bath: the Ravine in Central Park. Tucked within the park's North Woods, this hidden stream valley is a beautiful mix of dense trees and waterwhich just so happen to be the primary ingredients for the therapy. And no wonder. Restored in 2017 by the Central Park Conservancy, this northern oasis was designed to resemble the Adirondacks by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 19th ...century. You can approach the Ravine from different directions. One of the easiest may be entering Central Park at 110th Street and Lenox Avenue, skirting past Lasker Pool and passing through the Huddlestone Arch. The walk leads past a soothing waterfall, romantic stone arches and a stream where frolicking birds take leisurely dips. Within minutes, glass, steel and concrete will feel miles awayand your forest bath will begin. THE UNEXPECTED JOURNEY OF THE THREE DANCING MAIDENS of the Untermyer Fountain. This beautiful statue depicts three distinctly different yet cohesive, fancy-free young women dancing joyously in a water spray. Situated in the center of the French garden section of Central Park’s Conservatory Garden, this German sculpture fits in perfectly with the slightly oval garden design. In 1947 the fountain was gifted to Central Park from the estate of Samuel Untermyer. A self-made millio...naire lawyer, Untermyer was well known for support of Zionism and for breaking up American monopolies. It is not known how Untermyer got the cast copy, or possibly the original fountain, to his estate in Yonkers, a New York City suburb. Designed in 1903 in Germany, the original fountain was in front of the Berlin estate of Rudolf Mosse, a Jewish liberal and newspaper publisher. The Mosse family estate was across from the German Chancellery, and Adolph Hitler is said to have had a view of this fountain. The Mosse family had to flee Germany in the 1930s, leaving everything behind, including this sculpture that celebrates the innocence of youth. BEST PLACE TO HONOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY. To a modern-day visitor, Seneca Village at Central Park resembles much of the surrounding area, with rolling hills, rock outcrops, and playgrounds. What many do not realize is that this area near the park’s West 85th Street entrance has an important history. The village existed between 1825 and 1857. In 1855, there were approximately 225 residents a population that consisted of roughly two-thirds African Americans. During the fi...rst half of the 19th century, it was home to Seneca Village, a community of predominantly African Americans, many of whom owned property. To Rev. Audrey Williamson, a minister at Harlem's Mother Ame Zion Church, this is hallowed ground for her congregation's history, which once stood proudly in Seneca Village. Mother Ame Zion is the oldest black institution in all of New York State, it was the center of the community." There were over 50 homes in Seneca Village, three churches, and a school. For African American property owners, Seneca Village provided residential stability and an investment in the future. Another incentive to owning property at the time was that it gave African Americans the right to vote. Thirty years into their community and through eminent domain, the city paid every person to up and leave, essentially kicking them out. The church and the villages all, but vanished until the 1990s when researchers started diving into census records and maps. That's when archaeologists excavated part of the land and found deep in the earth, two centuries later, remnants of Seneca Village. They found items like dishes, drinking cups, teacups and coins all the kinds of things that made up their home. Today, there are temporary signs telling this chapter of the story. Signs that many hopes will stay and serve as an important reminder. (1) * * * (1) Mannarino, Dan. Hidden New York: Seneca Village Unearthed. BEST PLACE FOR JOGGERS. Officially named the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in 1994, the Reservoir is famed for the 1.58 mile track that encircles the 106-acre body of water. This favorite jogging spot of Jackie O, Bill Clinton, and a number of other influential people covers approximately 1/8th of the Park and holds over a billion gallons of water. From its 86th street location, the Reservoir offers runners one of the best views of the city skyline, and allows bird...watchers a great location in which to spot herons, egrets, coots, and loons. BEST PLACE TO SEE ART (+ TRAVEL ). One of the 21st century’s great wonders, the Metropolitan Museum of Art contains an incomparable collection of humanity’s greatest accomplishments spanning 6,000 years and the entire globe. Where else can you see the inside of an Egyptian tomb, a full set of Japanese armor and a room of Renaissance paintings in one day?(1) The Met, is the largest art museum in the United States. With 6,479,548 visitors to its three locations in 2019, it... was the fourth most visited art museum in the world. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among 17 curatorial departments. The main building at 1000 Fifth Avenue, along the Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park in Manhattan's Upper East Side, is by area one of the world's largest art galleries. (2) By visiting the Met, you can temporarily leave New York City if only in spirit. Visitors can stand in an ancient Egyptian temple, relax in a Chinese Garden Court, stroll around a 16th-century Spanish castle’s patio, visit a villa bedroom that was swallowed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, and admire a room like the ones found in the late Ottoman period in Damascus, Syria. BEST PLACE FOR REFLECTION. Named after one of Lennon’s favorite songs, Strawberry Fields Forever, the memorial is located just across the street from the landmark Dakota apartment building, Lennon’s former home and the site of his tragic death in 1980. Like many an Upper West Sider, Lennon would often take walks in this very landscape. Strawberry Fields was officially dedicated on October 9, 1985, the 45th anniversary of Lennon’s birth. His widow, Yoko Ono Lennon, wor...ked with landscape architect Bruce Kelly and the Central Park Conservancy to create a memorial that would preserve Lennon’s legacy as a visionary of world peace. The Imagine mosaic, made by Italian craftsmen and gifted by the city of Naples, is a testament to Lennon’s global resonance. A designated Quiet Zone in the Park, Strawberry Fields has also been endorsed as a Garden of Peace by 121 countries, whose names appear on a bronze plaque on the path leading to the memorial.
