Did you know that your gut houses 70-80% of your immune system? Crazy right? Some even call our gut our "second brain."... If your gut is not healthy, you are not healthy, PERIOD. The gut isn't an isolated unit, it's connected to a multitude of systems in our body. More of the neurotransmitters serotonin, GABA, and melatonin are found in the gut than in the brain: Imbalances in serotonin are linked with depression and other mood disorders. Imbalances in GABA has been linked with anxiety because GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter. Altered melatonin production will disrupt our circadian rhythms (sleep/wake cycles). Maybe this second brain thing isn't so crazy after all. Our gut is also home to about 500 species and 3-5 pounds of bacteria. Some are healthy and helpful while others, not so much. We need both but the balance of good and bad bacteria in our gut will affect our metabolism, psychological well being, hormone balance, and immunity. It's a pretty important organ and we should probably take care of it, don't you think? Too much of the wrong bacteria, like parasites and yeasts, or not enough good ones, like Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria, can have implications on our health. Visceral fat (the deadly kind that builds up around our organs) is one of the direct effects of increased gut permeability. Much like your hormones, your gut health can be restored over time with the proper changes to nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle. Here are some other actions you can get started with right away! Remove potential food toxins from your diet (cereals, grains, soy, processed oils, sugar) Eat plenty of fermentable fibers (starches like sweet potato, yam, yucca, etc.) Eat fermented foods like kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, etc., take a high-quality, multi-species probiotic, and/or drink bone broth. Be careful of added sugar to kefir and yogurt. Treat any intestinal pathogens (such as parasites) that may be present. You will need help here if you suspect any issues Take steps to manage your stress

Did you know that racism in and of itself causes illness? Yep, it's true. The body reacts to racism as it reacts to any kind of stress, and generates inflammation. Chronic inflammation leads to pretty much every disease imaginable - from heart attack to cancer. Many of us think that class is the key factor, but studies actually show that this is not the case. ... In fact the key factor is race. The name for this phenomenon is "weathering." Weathering is the cumulative effect of exposure to chronic stresses both big and small. Breaking the stress cycle is absolutely critical for all people, but especially Black and brown folks who live under conditions of additional chronic stress due to racism.

Here's a useful article on what positivity actually is, and how it impacts our health. "There are several ways in which positive psychological well-being may improve health...Positive affect may reduce the activation of certain pathways that directly impact health, such as nervous system, immune, and inflammatory pathways. Additionally, having a positive affect has been associated with a greater likelihood of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This process has been called the upward spiral theory of lifestyle change.

Thanksgiving is our favorite holiday! Although this year is different, we want to express our gratitude for all of the Align community. You guys have hung in and showed your support throughout this difficult year. Thank you! Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~ Melody Beattie
