Our patients become extended family. Honest real conversations take place daily. Today a patient with food allergies came to office with his mother. After discussing the plan for evaluation and management of old and new food allergies we veered into a discussion on covid. The mother asked if my children wear masks and practice social distancing. I said yes - we’ve stressed it’s important. She asked how do we get them to participate willingly and I told her, and I’...ll tell you too. My husband and I sat down with our children and talked about covid. About the risks to vulnerable patients - elderly and immunocompromised and those with comorbidities like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and those who are essential workers and living in multigenerational homes. We spoke about our responsibility to keep our family healthy - our children and ourselves - and our patients and community safe. We empowered them to show social responsibility by wearing a mask and social distancing. And then we reminded them of the most important good deed (mitzvah) a child can perform - respecting their parents (kibud av v’em). We explained that while they can’t pay for food on the table or the roof over our heads they can pay us dearly with respect, and what better way than to value our lives - our health - and the lives of everyone around them. And so when you see our children out in masks it is not because they are afraid or forced, they are wearing masks to show us, and you, that they love and respect their parents and their community. They are performing the greatest mitzvah by putting their parents and grandparents, and community, before themselves. Masks work. If everyone wore masks when social distancing not possible - in stores, and on busy streets, and when in small gatherings - transmission of covid would decrease and we would all be safer. Let’s live in a world where we respect each other the way we respect our parents - cherishing the health and well being of every life.
