I am beyond stoked to say I am going IMSA racing again! A last minute call this week will put me on the grid with my buddies Andrew Pinkerton and Gino Manley in... the AOA Racing Audi at Daytona International Speedway! Truly taking me back to my roots with a limited budget, an open trailer, and close friends trying to make a dream come true. I have sponsorship opportunities still available if anyone is interested in being a part of what will be an incredible journey and story.

Jennifer Revson reminded me in her post that today is the fifth anniversary of the passing of racing legend and McLaren principal Tyler Alexander. Tyler grew up... in Massachusetts and became involved in racing in his early years through the ex-Zerex Special that was then owned by John Mecom. When Bruce McLaren bought it to make into the first McLaren sports racing car, Tyler followed with it and the rest, as they say, is history. In interviewing other mechanics of the period - Roger Bailey, Alec Greaves, Dr. Tony Attard - when I was writing my Road Atlanta Can-Am 1970 book they all had the utmost respect for Tyler. They all said he was the best "fabber" they had ever seen and his welding skills - learned in the aircraft industry - were second to none. In addition to being a great mechanic/engineer, he was also an accomplished photographer and a book of his photos was published a few years ago. I only got to see him in action twice, both times at Road Atlanta, for the Can-Am in 1970 and 71. This photo is from the 1970 race, the first Can-Am race in 3 1/2 years that McLaren did not come in first. In fact, in most cases they came in 1-2, and once they finished 1-2-3. See more

Meet Sébastien Loeb's Extreme E team-mate. Cristina Gutierrez might not be as well-known as her illustrious team-mate or famous team owner Lewis Hamilton, but, as Rachel Harris-Gardiner explains, she is one to watch out for in 2021

The subject of Sponsorship in Rallying comes up occasionally on some posts in this group for either drivers, teams or even at a sanctioning body level. To a poi...nt that there is a level of frustration in why some Rally drivers are so fast and talented but can't get a sponsor(s) or a factory drive, etc. Or why a Rally series and championship can't get a title sponsor and so on. Here are some thoughts from the guy that has mastered the subject better than anyone else in our sport in the past 15 or so years, but is also someone that has been on the other side of the deal and has sponsored many athletes in his life. Fast forward to 51:50 into the video. And more later into the interview. Sounds simple, but it isn't, but it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wcjjv6VF9Nw See more

My father scanned some old slides from 1961 that show some early days of Mosport!! Amazing shots and quality after all these years. Very little editing was needed.

You can always tell a racing photo that was shot at Sebring in the Glory Days. Whether it was the harsh sunlight, the palm trees, or the concrete track surface,... Sebring photos were unique. The one area I especially liked was the infamous Hairpin turn, where this photo of the #2 Gulf Porsche 917 driven by Rodriguez/Oliver was taken in the early afternoon. The photo is a bit misleading since I took it with a fairly wide angle lens - you were actually much closer to the cars than this appears. The corner workers here were pretty good about allowing you to get close to the apex for your shot as long as you didn't camp out in the spot. There was also one of the last remaining Triumph observation towers here and some of the photogs could talk their way into getting up top to get some spectacular photos. I never tried, unfortunately. This Porsche, with Pedro at the wheel, would, shortly after this photo was taken, have a territorial dispute in the remote Turn 10 with the immaculate Sunoco Ferrari 512 driven by Mark Donohue. It is generally agreed that both lost but Pedro did end up finishing higher. See more

The Pierce-Arrow Museum (Part I): In Buffalo, NY is one of the world’s finest collections of WNY-made automobiles and beyond. The Buffalo Transportation Pierc...e-Arrow Museum has been closed since last winter due to Covid, but they are hopeful to open again this spring. This weekend, museum founder and owner Jim Sandoro gave me a guided tour into his life’s passion, now a treasure trove that he and his wife, MaryAnn, have amassed over the last 50 years. The warehouse turned museum is a jaw dropping walk down memory lane. Sandoro is as much a WNY icon as the cars he showcases and celebrates here. The Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company, founded by entrepreneur George Pierce, was based in Buffalo and produced very high end automobiles from 1901-1938. The first two official cars of the White House were a pair of Pierce-Arrow cars ordered by President William Howard Taft in 1909. Famed FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had a bullet proof Pierce-Arrow, the first one ever made, and its rusted remains are now part of the impressive collection here (pictured below). Despite being closed during the pandemic, that hasn’t stopped Sandoro from pursuing his passion. The collection has grown impressively in the last ten months, including the addition of a Steve McQueen tribute car, a stunning Ford GT now on full display (second image here). This museum is a celebration of Western New York’s rich automotive history and beyonda legacy that will live forever thanks to the spectacular efforts of Jim and MaryAnn Sandoro. See more

I figured it was time to share this story with the group. Back in February 2020 I visited the shop of our recently departed friend, Charlie Cook. I met Charlie ...through research for a book on the Viper GTS-R program he was involved with through the mid 90s. We were at his place to buy some Viper parts and pick up a few things I agreed to sell on Charlie's behalf. Knowing we were big into Mopar history he said we may be interested in this old Dodge he had under a cover in another part of the shop. He took us back there and lifted the cover to reveal Kal Showket's IMSA RS Dodge Daytona. We immediately recognized it because I had the decal of this car on my mirror as a kid and my parents watched it race at Watkins Glen in 1984. Charlie said this was the first of two Dodges he would build for Kal to run in IMSA RS/Proformance. With the help of Bo Montgomery, Phil Currin, Andy Vann and Scott Gilliam I've been able to confirm what Charlie remembered. This one debuted in 1984 as #99 and would continue racing through 1987. It wore #0 I believe in 1986 and 1987. The second car was built for Kal to drive in the 1986 season and he ran it through 1987. The pictures provided by Phil Currin and Scott Gilliam have been extremely helpful in sorting through the historical timeline. My father had fond memories of the car and made a deal to buy it from Charlie. We hauled it from Alabama all the way back to Pennsylvania and to my surprise upon opening the trailer my mother said, "Is that Kal Showket's car?" She hadn't seen it since that race at the Glen. So now I'd like to begin work to get it back on track as a tribute to Charlie and his team. I'm certainly thankful I was able to meet Charlie and share a friendship over 2018-2020. I'm looking forward to learning even more of the history associated with his team and these cars in the future.

Marlboro Motor Raceway, Refrigerator Bowl 1963 had a rather diverse field. Elmo Langley in a Ford Galaxie ran fifth. Dick Thompson and three others in Corvette...s would beat him to the line. Also in the field was a V-8-60 Midget, a go kart, and some Formula Juniors. From LOST ROAD COURSES, by Martin Rudow. (Bill Dobbins Photo) See more

My dad and I recap our experience at Team O'Neil's 5-Day Rally School. We were both so incredibly impressed with our overall experience and driver skill develop...ment. Every instructor challenged us, genuinely cared about our improvement as drivers, and instilled driving habits that undoubtedly contributed to much improved car control, confidence, and speed! Best of all, I had a blast, especially because I was able to do it with my dad! We will test our sharpened skills very very soon!
