The Art Students League of New York 06.11.2020

This talk takes the form of one of Concha-Núñez’s virtual museum education classes, adapted for a lecture format. The talk covers four Latin American artists, Fernando Botero, Marisol Escobar, Frida Kahlo, and Wifredo Lam, as a group of mini lessons. For each artist, Concha-Núñez will introduce, establish social and historical context, examine one work in particular through rich visual analysis, and then open the floor for a small Q&A before moving on to the next artist. This interactive format presents a dynamic way for the audience to engage throughout the presentation and returns focus to these renowned yet still underrepresented artists. The presentation is in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15).

In the early days of quarantine here in New York City, instructor Jason Bard Yarmosky provided us with a short lesson to set up our "at-home studio for successful portrait painting." Since then he has been spending his time "working through 2020." In this short film, he explains how his studio practice has changed during this time.... : Dave Geffin See more

Spanning 30 days from September 15October 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month was established by the United States Congress in 1988. The month "celebrates and recognizes the contributions made by Hispanic Americans to American society and culture." As part of highlighting contributions in the arts, we proudly share this photograph of the artist known simply as "Marisol" (1930-2016). Her works are part of the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Broo...klyn Museum, MoMA The Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and El Museo del Barrio. Born in Paris to Venezuelan parents, Marisol spent her early years split between France, Venezuela, and New York. She studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League in 1951. In this photo she poses with her tools alongside her sculptures. Marisol's life and art journey is so dense that it easily exceeds the scope of this post! Her work encompasses themes including: pre-Columbian cultures of Latin America, women in a male-dominated industry, Latinas living and working in NYC, and identity and representation in pop art. We highly encourage you all to take time and do a deep dive on this artist. Estamos bien agradecidos por su empeño, Marisol! : Walter Sanders, 1957. #ArtMakers #CreateArt #57thStreet #ArtSchool #Marisol See more

The League is saddened to share news that beloved art model Christophe Nayel recently passed away. He is survived by his loving husband. In the years that Christophe modeled at The League he became a source of visual inspiration for our artists. Known for the uncanny ability to hold poses with strained and exaggerated facial features, Christophe was a delightful and jovial person on and off the model stand. Every class exhibit had a depiction of the Frenchman in an elab...orate costume that he created to strike visual interest in our artists. His presence in our hallways, parties, and gatherings always added levity to our dayshe was certainly a model that fit in perfectly with the spirit of The League. Several instructors, monitors, students, and models are sharing images of Christophe on Instagram with heartfelt tributes of their own. Thank you @jondemartin, @danthompsonart, @yezzycohen, and @momostudio_28 for sharing your stories about this fun-loving soul that took a big bite out of life. He lives on as works of art.
