The future of pavement design will involve performance-based specifications to meet the growing demand for pavement to serve multiple functions beyond just carrying traffic. The Federal Highway Administration and various industry associations are forging alliances with academia to modernize the specifications for paving mixtures beyond the traditional measurements of strength, slump and air. This article looks at trends to increase pavement durability and sustainability as well as accommodate innovations such as solar panels, deicing technology, and tire safety warning systems.

As Safety Week comes to a close today, we wanted to provide you with one technique for keeping yourself safe: being aware of your surroundings, also known as situational awareness. Situational awareness is being aware of what is happening around you in terms of where you are, where you are supposed to be and whether anyone or anything around you is a threat to your health and safety. Even the most experienced people can lack situational awareness especially when doing tas...ks that have become routine (complacency). Sometimes we become so focused on what we are doing, we can lose sight of what is going on around us. One technique that you can use to enhance your situational awareness is the SLAM technique described below. SLAM consists of four simple steps: STOP Engage your mind before you act. Look at the task(s) at hand. LOOK at your workplace and find the hazards to you and your coworkers. What MIGHT happen? ASSESS the effects that the hazards have on you, the people you work with, equipment, procedures, pressures and the environment. Ask yourself if you have the knowledge, training and tools to do the task safely. MANAGE Reduce or eliminate the risk(s) make a smart choice! If you feel unsafe stop working. Tell your supervisor what actions you think are necessary to make the situation safe. As we continue through 2019, commit yourself to always being aware of your surroundings and being Safe by Choice.

The story of engineering is a sweeping tale defined by constant change and innovation, and it’s far from over. In fact, 2019 is one of the most exciting and critical chapters in engineering’s long and rich history, with new technologies constantly emerging to solve some of society’s most pressing issues. Here, at ATANE, we are proud to count ourselves as characters in this important story. And as a reader of this blog, you’re part of it, too.
