Message on the occasion of the Austrian-American Day In 1997, the President of the United States, William J. Clinton, proclaimed September 26th the Austrian-American Day. Only few might know that at the beginning of the 20th century, Austrians constituted the largest cohort of immigrants to the U.S. with about 3.5 Million people who sought their fortune in the U.S., accounting e.g. for 7.5 percent of Pittsburgh’s population at the time. Most of them became U.S. citizens. ... Today, Austrians in the U.S. tally at around 35.000 compatriots who have made the United States their home, and who are active in such diverse fields as business, science, culture or the creative sector. This success story of Austria and our fellow Austrians would not have been possible without the generous post-World War II assistance by the U.S., either through the Marshall Plan, which contributed greatly to our country’s economic development or the Fulbright Program in the field of academic and student exchange. These programs allowed Austria to thrive: Since 2015, America has become the second largest market for Austrian products worldwide; at the same time, Austrian companies in the U.S. provide jobs for over 30.000 US citizens, most of them in the important manufacturing sector. Our mutually beneficent economic relations do indeed prosper at a very high level. It therefore comes as no surprise that the U.S.-Austrian strategic partnership, formalized on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the diplomatic relations in 2018, saw in 2019 the first visit of an Austrian Chancellor at the White House in a long time as well as a recent bilateral visit also the first in quite a while- by the U.S. Secretary of State in Vienna. This strategic partnership will soon be complemented by a civil society dialogue. The importance of civil society is furthermore underscored by a current project of historic dimensions by the Austrian Government: the granting of Austrian citizenship also to the descendants of Holocaust victims; this highly popular scheme has recently been keeping the Austrian Missions abroad including the Austrian Consulate General in New York quite busy. To end, and as a worthy symbol of our shared U.S.-Austrian values and endeavors, we would also like to pay special tribute to the long standing laudable work of the Austrian-American Councils and their long-time President Juliana Belcsak.
