Uncle Larry, shown here, was an American GI who met my aunt Hai, and fell in love and married her in Vietnam. Once Saigon fell, American soldiers were ordered to leave and Uncle Larry took my aunt back to the States. He would eventually sponsor our entire extended family over to the US. As a child refugee, Uncle Larry was an enigma to me. He was a giant, he was outspoken, and he liked to hunt. He was as American as can bean identity I had not yet grasped. I can understand ...why my aunt fell in love with Uncle Larry, now as an adult. Though it was taboo to marry an outsider, she did it for the simple reason that he wasand still isa kind and thoughtful human being. Even during the last few years of her life, after she had fallen ill, he stayed with her and devoted his life to caring for her. We often salute veterans for their courage, the battles that they fought, and the political ideals that they are tied to; but we hardly ever acknowledge their lives outside of war. They are husbands, fathers, uncles and brothers. For me, Uncle Larry, was a mentor. He taught me that no matter how different we are, he a white, conservative Christian, and I, a Vietnamese, fresh off the boat, Buddhist refugee, there is one thing that binds us. We are human, and we are all capable of love and compassion. #HappyVeteransDay
