As a reminder, with COVID numbers increasing, we still offer telemed appointments. What kind of visits are perfect for telemed? Med checks, lab reviews, Lyme/PANDAS concerns, baby feeding or sleep questions, rashes, pink eye. What’s better to come in for? Sick visits, physicals. New patients have to be seen in the office for their first visit. Stay safe!

COVID-19 cases in US children increased by 28% during just a two week period earlier this month! 1.2million kids now infected. We're seeing dramatic increases in the office. On Friday, for instance, of the 55 patients we ran a rapid antigen test on, 10 (18%) were positive. Only one was under age 18. Starting later this week, all our rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 will also include flu A & B. See dropbox link below for details.... https://www.dropbox.com//COVID%20Testing%20at%20Bambini.do

Wow, we had 12 patients test positive for COVID-19 in the office this week. That's more than we had between March and September combined! Of course, since September, we've been doing hundreds of in-office tests per week, and have extended out to adult family members of Bambini patients as well as some asymptomatic adults in the community. Most of those tests have been performed right in the patient's car. But as weather turns colder and the days get even shorter, we will be doing more testing in our annex on the second floor. We have recently had an ultra-violet air purifier in the air handler for our offices. In addition, we run two HEPA / UV filters in the room that we run the COVID testing.

Here's a really interesting find that Dr. Michael Miller recently brought to our attention: According to Nathan Jones, CEO and founder of Xlear: These latest data show that at clinically relevant concentrations (at the concentration of the Xlear Nasal Spray), xylitol blocks adhesion of more than 99.9% of the Sars-Cov-2 virus, the [grapefruit seed extract] working as a virucidal then inactivates more than 99.9% of SARS-CoV-2, which represents a compelling feature for the prod...uct. This potent 1-2 punch of blocking viral adhesion and virucidal action is consistent with what the invitro research shows. https://drugstorenews.com/studies-find-support-xlear-nasal- And this is not just theoretical.... several case reports are already out there: https://www.cureus.com//43909-potential-role-of-xylitol-pl The apothecary at Bambini currently has about 50 bottles of Xlear in stock. We have encouraged our clinical staff to keep a bottle handy and use daily.

We have created a new page on our website dedicated to COVID-19 testing www.bambini-peds.com. Availability of test kits for in-office testing, turnaround times at commercial labs, and staffing (we just hired another nurse) as well as newer technologies (we hope to bring PCR into the office later this month) -- are all factors that can change by the week! This last Saturday we had more patients come in for COVID testing than were seen for illness. ... https://www.dropbox.com//COVID%20Testing%20at%20Bambini.do

Sad but true: students who struggle in the classroom typically struggle even more online. We have been hearing this over and over again in the exam rooms. https://www.edweek.org//how-effective-is-online-learning-w Hopefully, this fall schools will do more than email worksheets and busy-work assignments to online learners. https://www.forbes.com//parents-on-remote-learning-part-1/

It's generally agreed that certain children should be medically-exempt from face masks at school. But how does a doctor determine that?? Will children that are missing a vaccine or two, due to delays brought on by the pandemic, still be permitted to take online classes this fall? School nurses will not likely be administering neb treatments to kids with asthma this coming school year. What can parents do about that?... Hurray, another male doc at Bambini! Michael Miller MD joins our staff next week. Dr. Miller graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ in 1998. After completing medical school at Rutgers four years later, he spent a year at Beth Israel as a resident in Internal Medicine before heading back to Rutgers to complete his pediatrics residency. Our summer student volunteer program was such a success that we are continuing on with it this fall! Learn what it is like to work in a busy pediatric practice here in the era of ramped-up infection control. Students will serve primarily as concierge prepping exam rooms between patients and chaperoning families from the waiting room to their assigned spot with additional experiences as circumstances permit....
