(WHEC/AP) Bars and restaurants across New York state can longer serve alcohol to customers unless they also order food, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday. These establishments can also no longer allow walk-up bar service, the governor said. Customers are allowed to order and consume their drinks while seated at least 6 feet apart or separated by physical barriers. Cuomo said the new policies are meant to increase compliance with the rules as the state has received thousands of complaints about bars and restaurants violating state guidelines. That increases the risk of spreading the coronavirus, Cuomo said. New Yorkers are outraged at these establishments, he said. We are getting thousands of complaints. The problem with both walk-up bar service and allowing drinking without ordering food is that many businesses have not isolated customers at separate tables, Cuomo said. The governor called on local governments to better enforce safety guidelines. I’ll tell you what’s less politically popular - if we have to close down a region because compliance wasn’t done, Cuomo said.
