Corn drying time at our Fabius farm! We couldn’t ask for better weather to be combining, hauling and drying our grain corn! After being harvested in the fields, the corn kernels are unloaded into a horizontal auger which is then taken to a wet bin. From there the dryer bin is filled. A propane burner is used to heat the air in the bin which dries the corn. Not that we (humans) are complaining at all with these beautifully warm November days we have been having, but did you know that the ideal temperature that dairy #cows prefer is between 25-65* Fahrenheit?! That means that as farmers, it is our job to keep our girls cool and comfy....so our fans are running, the curtains are open and we are all loving these abnormally warm temps!! It’s no secret that the misconceptions surrounding the use of antibiotics in livestock are rampant on the internet!? You certainly can’t believe everything you read, especially when it doesn’t come from the source!? ... And with that, first answer yourself this question: when you are sick, do you take a prescription from your Doctor? Next, have you ever seen the agenda pushed by activists that farmers abuse their animals? To us, it seems that activists want farmers to treat their animals more humanely, but when our animals are sick, they don’t want us to administer antibiotics to keep them healthy? Double standard, wouldn’t you say? Did you know that all antibiotics have a withdrawal date? The withdrawal date tells the #farmers how many days need to pass before the antibiotic is no longer functional or present in the animals body. These withdrawal dates also have different break down times for different tissue (milk, meat, liver.) There are layers of monitoring present in order to ensure that farmers are doing their part to ensure the highest food safety. After the withdrawal period passes, this means that the milk and meat you buy at the grocery store is free from antibiotics. Antibiotics are not the enemy! Here is our ground cornmeal at our Fabius farm. Whole corn kernels which were dried and stored in bins, is run through a hammer mill to grind it into cornmeal. This is to make the starch (energy) more readily digestible in the cows stomach.
