ICYMI, today is #NationalMedicalAssistantDay. Medical assistants are the backbone of our surgical team. Using advanced surgical techniques, they dissect extracted hairs during complex hair transplant procedures, ensure patients are comfortable and assist our surgeons every day. It is easy to overlook their critical role. However, today in particular, we are proud to celebrate their contributions to our practice and helping our patients transform how they look and feel.

This female patient arrived at our office with significant thinning at the front of her scalp and additional hair loss on top. We treated her with 3,289 follicular unit grafts over two hair transplant sessions. Afterwards, her curly brown hair filled in evenly and now looks full!

Did you know that artificial intelligence has transformed the way we perform surgeries? In 2011, our practice became one of the first in the world to use the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant System. ARTAS’s groundbreaking robotic FUE technology delivers precise, natural-looking results using a digital map of the patient’s head and allows us to deliver state-of-the-art surgery to all of our patients.

In the early 2000s, Bernstein Medical pioneered this less invasive alternative to FUT surgery, publishing the first medical research on the procedure. This new surgical approach is called Follicular Unit Excision (FUE). In many cases, FUE is performed on patients with shorter hair and does not leave a linear scar. Dr. Christine Shaver, who heads the NYC division of Bernstein Medical Center for Hair Restoration, explains what Follicular Unit Excision is and who can benefit the most from it.

Bernstein Medical 29.08.2020

When a doctor performs a hair transplant, the hair should be taken from the permanent zone, so, by definition, that hair is not affected by medication. If the doctors using FUE are suggesting that minoxidil increases survival, then they are probably harvesting hair outside the permanent zone. We use the ARTAS robotic system for our FUE procedures because the robot is a far more accurate device for harvesting. We do not offer the less effective Neograft device.

This month marks 18 years since Belena’s first day at Bernstein Medical! She started as a medical assistant and has gone on to complete her LPN, RN, and BSN all while raising a family and working at Bernstein Medical. We invest in our staff’s professional development because this is how we provide the best care for our patients. Our staff undergoes a rigorous training program before they are allowed to participate in patient care. At Bernstein Medical, we have only full-tim...e registered nurses and medical assistants. We do not have any day-hire technicians. Medical assistants train in our advanced surgical techniques for at least six months and typically take an additional six months to become comfortable. As you can see, however, this is a gateway to even greater achievements. We are now hiring a full-time medical assistant. If you want to join our highly-skilled surgical team, please email your resume to [email protected].

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma that contains approximately 5 times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. PRP for hair loss is a relatively new treatment and there are a limited number of scientific studies to show its efficacy. Because of this, we track the progress of all of our PRP patients and modify your treatment schedule as necessary. Read more: https://bit.ly/33xoOGl

The Ludwig classification categorizes female hair loss in three stages: Type I (mild), Type II (moderate), Type III (extensive). Dr. Erich Ludwig created the scale after observing patterned hair loss in nearly 500 women during the late 1970s. Dr. Ludwig’s findings confirmed that women and men lose hair differently. This observation provided patients with more hair loss treatment options and advanced new areas of research. In all three stages, there is hair loss on the front and top of the scalp with relative preservation of the frontal hairline. The back and sides may or may not be impacted. Regardless of the severity of hair loss, only women with stable hair on the back and sides of the scalp are candidates for hair transplant surgery.

The hair densitometer was introduced to hair restoration surgeons by Dr. William Rassman in 1993. It is a small, portable instrument that has a magnifying lens and an opening of 10 mm2. The densitometer can increase the accuracy of the diagnosis of genetic hair loss by picking up early miniaturization (decreased hair shaft diameter caused by the effects of dihydrotestosterone). It can also better assess a person’s donor hair supply for a hair transplant. Read more: https://www.bernsteinmedical.com//what-is-a-densitometer-/
