"I sometimes hear people say, 'God doesn’t speak to the modern Church as God once spoke to the ancient Church. There are no heavenly voices, no angelic appearances.' Well, I actually believe God does speak to us and is continuing to speak to the church in our time. You know what the problem is? We just don’t like what God is saying." -- "Outward Bound", sermon preached by the Bishop Dean E. Wolfe Sunday, June 14, 2020. Listen, or listen again to the entire sermon here.

The Forum begins at 10am: The Assumptions of Whiteness and the Challenge of Discipleship. As protests continue across the country, Bryan Massingale, the James a...nd Nancy Buckman Chair in Applied Christian Ethics at Fordham University, joins us for a discussion about how white people can confront their own prejudices and the systemic injustices of the larger culture. Please email your questions for our speaker to the Reverend Peter Thompson at [email protected] or post in the comments during the livestream.

Dear Friends, There has been a proliferation of incidents against black citizens in our country in recent weeks which raises deep concerns for all of us. As I have written several times since the pandemic began, the coronavirus does not change things. It reveals things. The thin veneer of our stated values has been peeled back to reveal an insidious and persistent racism which holds great power over us. Actor Will Smith observed, Racism isn’t new. They’re just filming it.... Through a series of graphic videos, we are being made undeniably aware of the injustices faced by our fellow citizens who appear to be in greater danger primarily because of the color of their skin. People of faith and conscience cannot allow a tolerance to such injustice to build. People of faith and conscience cannot pretend to act as if this is simply, business as usual. People of faith and conscience are called to proclaim the love of Jesus Christ in every corner of our society particularly in the places where inequality and racism appear to have gained the upper hand. The violence in Minneapolis in response to these incidents, just like the coronavirus, won’t change anything. But, deplorable as it is, it reveals the deep frustration of people who feel they have no non-violent alternatives to which to turn. The Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery, civil rights activist and founder of the Christian Leadership Conference, died this past year. He once preached, We have come too far. Marched too long. Prayed too hard. Wept too bitterly. Bled too profusely, and died too young, to let anybody turn back the clock on our journey together. We are called by God to move forward towards racial equality, and we cannot allow anybody or anything to turn back this clock. At St. Bart’s, let us always be praying and working fervently for justice, equality, and peace. +Dean
