We’d like to honor our Irish Hermanos by shining a light on El Batallón de San Patricio, St Patrick's Battalion. They were a group of Irish and other European immigrant soldiers who joined Mexico during the Mexican American war of 1846. The US had seized 1/3rd of Mexico’s territory, what is today the U.S. states of Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The Irish immigrants who gave their all identified the actions as those very similar to their homeland, one that saw raw arrogant imperial power seizing homes, lands, property of another, smaller, weaker nation of Catholic working people. We as Mexicans still feel a kinship with the Irish to this day, as a group of hard working honorable people and we’re proud in joining them today in saying Eirinn Go Brach, Ireland forever.
