Angelica root (Angelica archangelica) can be used in a tea to soothe any stomach issues because it gets your gastric juices going. It's also good for calming anxiety and supporting your respiratory system. Native to the area known as Germany, it has been used in rituals and ceremonies as early as the 10th century. Sometimes called Holy Spirit, it's in the same plant family as celery and also looks like poison hemlock, so you need to be clear about making the ID in the spring ...when it blooms. We are so excited to announce that we'll be offering a tea CSA known as the Bramble Tea Club! Being in a global pandemic has been hard in in so many ways, ...especially for our small herb shop. The Tea Club! is a call to our community to help Bramble stay in Ithaca! The Tea Club! can only happen with your support! We need 60 members to sign up by December 15th to get this off the ground. Each of the 3 options will receive a 2 oz tea blend per month curated to support you and your health for the duration of that particular month. In addition, all the Tea Club! members will receive a discount in the shop or online. The second option includes a monthly Zoom class about the tea and the third level option includes all of those things plus an online consult with either Amanda David (@rootworkherbals) or Ciele Gladstein (@irunskillets). Here's some of the lemon balm that was in our garden hanging up to dry. Nothing fancy, this is a classic drying technique using what I had at home. Ties from fruits/veggies, binder clips (because I love them and have so many), and the over the door rack that I had one too many things on it that I finally got around to putting away. One way to get kids interested in herbs is to point out the herbs that are already present in the things they eat and drink every day. Ask kids about their favorite foods! Together, you can identify what herbs are used in the recipe and learn about them. Is it a fresh herb that you are growing on a window sill, in a container, or in a garden? Have the child engage their senses and smell and touch and taste the fresh herb. If the child is writing, let them have a moment to jo...urnal about it. If the child is into drawing, how about having them make a visual record? Over the course of the summer, you can choose an herb a week or every two weeks to learn about more in depth. For younger kids, you can show the different uses throughout the week. For older kids, have them do a little research (using Libby for digital library books or book pickup at the library, or if you have reliable internet access, a quick search will reveal a lot of information). Older kids can also make a plan to use the herb based on knowledge they gain (making a meal, sun tea, a salve, bath salts, foot soak, or a sachet). Some herbs to start out with: mint, oregano, rosemary, lavender, plantain, dandelion, violet, lemon balm, and garlic. Connecting kids to plant knowledge is a liberatory practice. It attracts pollinators and provides soil stabilization. It's working, like many plant allies, above and below the ground. The Oneida community calls this plant Number Six because they say it was the sixth medicine given by the Creator to the people....
