Brantingham Snowmobiling 13.01.2021

1/12/21 26 degrees and a flurry this morning, picked up a dusting of snow since yesterday’s report. No major snowstorms forecasted, which we desperately need th...ough a few chances at snow throughout the week. Groomer Dick gave the local ladies a night off and took one of the groomers out for a spin instead. His report is that the seasonal roads are flatter than pi$$ on a platter (his words not mine). Groomer Dick also reports seeing four snowmobilers and a (insert expletive of choice here) 4 wheeler. Groomer Dick smoothed the seasonal roads the best he could between Highmarket and Tabolts corners and over to Whiskey Jacks / Smith road. Sorry we don’t have any grooming pics from last night , Groomer Dick has a phone that you can’t even play snake on! If Dick ever discovered online dating though he would camp out in front of the Apple Store for weeks waiting for the latest IPhone! Snapped some photos this morning though. We still don’t have much snow to work with so expect fair conditions on our seasonal roads today with icy conditions in the corners and higher traffic areas. Riding is possibly basically from Osceola East toward Highmarket and north towards Montague and Barnes Corners with thin conditions mostly, conditions may vary from mile to mile, some poor some good and everything in between. All non seasonal road trails will stay closed as we await more snow and cold to firm up the ground, We have not yet opened Lee Gulf or any of the trails off of the hill, no trail access to The Towpath, West Wind, Edge Hotel, Boondocks, Brantingham, Old Forge, etc. Your best riding today on our trails will be highmarket and points north, take it slow, watch for hazards, park and ride areas listed below for our trails, check with other clubs before riding. Please continue to stay off of our closed trails, they are well marked both with signs and the maps. Please support our daily grooming and trail report efforts by joining our club at www.jointrr.com Parking Areas: -Barrows Performance -Smith Rd Parking Lot (end of smith rd Constableville) -State Lots near Timberview (carpenter rd Turin) -Highmarket Inn (small capacity) -Whiskey Jacks (small capacity) You can view open and closed trails here on the NYSSA Interactive Trail Map. Tuesday evening ride... total of 65 miles today. Some good, some not so good. Worst of the trails were 5 from the water park to 8, 3 from intersection 8 to trail 9, Trail 10. A decent day of riding, some snow, but mostly a mix of freezing rain and flurries... looking better.

Tuesday, December 29... Around 2-3 last night, certainly helped cover up the Christmas Day disaster. Groomers are out with the tractor pulling tires and rolli...ng with the rubber tracked machine, there’s not enough snow to pull a drag. Cold today, highs in the mid-teens and lows in single digits. None of the trails are groomed. The conditions remain extremely marginal. For those of you who say I’d rather be riding than be a keyboard warrior, so would I... I get it that some only have certain times they can ride and this week is typically one of those weeks for a lot of people. I don’t blame them for trying to get some riding in. But the truth is, the trails aren’t ready for everyday traffic. It’s not safe and it’s not advisable. If you don’t care about the conditions and ride regardless of what’s being reported, please be cautious. That being said a few things you should be aware of: trail 6 sucks in its entirety (I know this because my buddy Nick rode from Okara Lakes to Big Moose today and regrets the 20+ mile trip), trail 2 from Sheldrick’s Run to the Big Moose Station is a mess because of the logging still going on. That’s all I got right now. Ride right.

Sunday, January 3... What was slush is now frozen solid, ruts and all. No new snow overnight. A slight chance we’ll get some late night, but if we don’t we’re... looking at a whole lot of nothing for the next 7 days or more. Some clubs have opened up parts their trail systems, please respect the landowners and don’t ride trails that are not open yet. Check with the clubs who maintain the trails you would like to ride for the most up to date information. Ride where you can, when you can. If you choose our trail system, it’s still marginal conditions at best. For some that’s enough.

The freezing of Big Moose Lake (photos courtesy of C. Martin) If you ever wondered why some areas of the lake never seem to have tracks on them, maybe these pic...tures will bring be some clarity to that question. Unless you're familiar with a lake, it is not a good idea to leave the beaten path and "play" in the wide open spaces. ---- THERE ARE NO TRACKS ON THESE PICTURES - THE LINES ARE PRESSURE CRACKS --- (Big Moose Lake is far from rideable at the moment) Praying we get as little as possible of the forecasted rain tomorrow. Maybe Santa will bring some from the North Pole on his way through the Adirondacks. See more
