# TBT Throw Back Thursday 8 years ago today, Broad Channels' Volunteer Fire Dept went to work, as it always has during coastal storms, pushing back against wind and tide to rescue civilians and extinguish fires. And we did. But this storm would be different. Mother Nature pushed harder than she ever had, bringing in an unprecedented tidal surge and for the first time in its 107 years of operation (at the time) the department had to cease operations to live to fight another d...ay. We would lose the battle against Sandy and in the process lose equipment, lose vehicles, and almost lost the firehouse. Some members lost homes, lost jobs, and everybody lost finances. Some even lost hope, never returning back to Broad Channel. We were down, lower than we ever had been, but we were not out. It took longer than expected, quite frankly the recovery is still on going, but we rebuilt. The department and the town came back, but we're not 100%. There's still work to be done. And we need your help. The department is in dire need of in town firefighters and EMTs. So when the next big one comes in, we have the manpower to go back into battle. If history proves anything, it proves that when Mother Nature or other emergencies arrive at our front door, the Vollies are the first line of defense. But they can't show up in seconds, like they're capable of doing, without members. It's alot of work and dedication. There's no question about it. But history has proven it's absolutely necessary that this dept continue to operate. So when they come knocking for a donation, or ask you to stand by their side, put on that uniform, join their ranks, gear up and fight the good fight.....don't hesitate. Do it. You'll be glad you did. See more

Due to the current and obvious circumstances, this years activities for Fire Prevention Week have been cancelled including our annual visit to the schools. We are working on perhaps a virtual tour of the newly renovated firehouse and a safety tip video that the children can watch with their parents at their leisure. More info to come on that.

#TBT Throw Back Thursday Engine 201 parked in front of quarters preparing for Mardi Gras '96. Recently this rig was up for sale by its current owner and has been purchased by a reputable collector and restorer of former FDNY Fire Apparatus. Congrats to him and anyway we can help in its restoration, let us know.

As most of you know this past summer was our summer for Mardi Gras. Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions we were unable to move forward with most of our fundraising events due to social distancing guidelines. The loss of summer fundraising events adds a huge financial burden to the departments operating expenses. We decided to host an ongoing 50/50 and pull the winner on 12/12/20! One winner will receive half the cash raised. The departments share will go towards... our monthly operating expenses. Tickets are $50 each. If you would like to purchase a ticket please let us know. Checks can be mailed to the firehouse.

This patch was created by now Ex-Capt Robert Nussberger. He was the officer in charge of Ambulance 303 on September 11th, 2001, when it left quarters at approx 0900hrs with Capt Nussberger, FF/EMT Christopher Kalisak as the tech, FF Fred Grey as the Motor Vehicle Operator and FF Ed Wilmarth III as an additional FF. Amb 303 responded as both a Basic Life Support unit and a Rescue unit of sorts. All 4 crew members donned full turnout gear in lieu of standard duty uniforms an...Continue reading
