So this happened on Saturday here at Brompton. Melvin Howard a resident here, was honored and presented with a Quilt of Valor. Senior Chief Melvin Howard Jr., during his twenty years of service in the United States Coast Guard, had received several medals and awards. He was also recognized for passing the gateway to the top of the world by crossing the Arctic Circle in 1972. Also while stationed in Buffalo in 1976, he received the Serviceman of the Year award. Quilts of ...Valor began back in 2003 by a Blue Star mom, Catherine Roberts, right in her sewing room in Seaford, Delaware. Her son Nathaniel’s yearlong deployment to Iraq provided the initial inspiration and her desire to see the returning troops welcomed home with love and gratitude. Catherine linked quilters in a national effort to create these healing quilts and award them to the returning service men and women touched by war.
