Travelers along the fabled Silk Road would pick apples at one spot and toss their cores many miles away. The seeds grew into trees in new locations, cross-bred with wild species, and created more than 7,000 varieties of apples that exist today! This made the apple genome very complex and difficult to study. However, a global team co-led by BTI's Zhangjun Fei and Gan-Yuan Zhong, scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service applied cutting edge technology to tackle this problem, leading to knowledge that could be used for crop improvement, such as improving size, flavor, sweetness and texture. http://bit.ly/BTI_GenomicResourcesForImprovingApples

Meet Josh Judkins! A 2008 Stern Lab PGRP intern, Josh returned to work in the Schroeder Lab (2009-2014) studying small molecules that regulate C. elegans life span and development. Believing that BTI contributed to who he is today and that the work we do makes the world a better place, he includes BTI in his annual giving. Happy #MoleDay! Celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m., Mole Day commemorates Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 1023), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day was created as a way to foster interest in chemistry.

Breeders at national research institutes who until recently recorded data from field or greenhouse trials with a pen and paper, and later transferred it into excel sheets on their computers, now record the data on tablets and upload it directly into a database such as SweetPotatoBase a crop-specific breeding support platforms hosted by BTI.
