Heart failure affects more than 26 million people and a new study published last week by the American Heart Association presents evidence that sleep problems may play a role in the development of this chronic condition. Emerging evidence indicates that adults with healthy sleep patterns, such as being a morning riser, sleeping seven - eight hours a day without snoring or insomnia, saw a 42% reduction in the risk of heart failure compared to those with unhealthy sleep patterns. #sciencebuff #FindWhy #WNYCulturalConnections

If you woke up to reports of a fireball in the Buffalo sky, you may have shrugged it off as just another chapter in 2020. But what happened yesterday is pretty rare and the science behind it is definitely impressive. A meteor traveling approximately 56,000 mph crashed through the Earth’s atmosphere over NY triggering a boom and spectacular flash. Videos have been coming in from witnesses across the region and footage of the meteor was even captured by the CN Tower in Toronto...! Here’s a little science on that thundering noise heard as far away as Wisconsin. If a larger meteor gets within 30 miles of the Earth’s surface and then explodes, it can cause a sonic boom - the same phenomena that we saw yesterday. This occurs when the shock waves caused by the exploding meteor travel faster than the speed of sound! Although it is rare for meteors to be seen near major cities, every day approximately 25 million meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere. As they travel through the atmosphere, the vast majority are broken up before creating any kind of large impact. The resulting dust (about 1,000 metric tons of dust per day) settles to the Earth's surface. #sciencebuff #FindWhy #WNYCulturalConnections

Known by many names, manioc is a food you can find across Latin American cultures. Whether it's called cassava, manioc, yuca, macaxeira, mandioca, or aipim, the starchy tuberous roots of this woody shrub can be grated, pressed, and roasted to create manioc flour. This 20th century Venezuelan manioc flour sifter from our Collection comes from the Ventuari River area, the largest tributary to the Orinoco River. #HispanicHeritageMonth #sciencebuff #FindWhy #WNYCulturalConections
