Faces of Buffalo State: Osa Agbontaen, Media Production Major, Class of 2020 We checked in with Buffalo State student Osa Agbontaen, who serves an RA and a student worker in the Campbell Student Union. Q: Why did you choose Buffalo State College?... I chose Buffalo State for a new challenge. Breaking out of my comfort zone and going 8 hours away from the utopia of the Bronx to Buffalo. Since going to Buffalo State, it has shaped me to become more of a hard worker. You’re going to have to work hard for the goals you set to accomplish for yourself. Buffalo State has also helped me have more empathy for others, due to the social climate we are living in today. You don’t know what other people are going through and the best way to help with that is to have empathy and understanding. Try to make someone smile if you can! Q: Tell us something unique about yourself! I love collecting fitted caps! Catch me with a baseball hat on always! Q: What advice do you have for your fellow students? Be yourself. Buffalo State Civic & Community Engagement Bengals Dare to Care 2020 begins this week!

Bengals Dare to Care 2020, a reformatted version of the annual Bengals Dare to Care Day, will provide a monthlong opportunity for students, faculty, and staff members to listen, learn, and participate in a number of social justice initiatives. Instead of heading out into the community to tackle various projects in person as in years past, students, faculty, and staff this year can participate in a series of weekly events starting the week of October 26. Themes are centered on showing Buffalo State College’s commitment to social responsibility, community building, and social justice.

Buffalo State College’s Patricia H. and Richard E. Garman Art Conservation Department is celebrating fifty years this year! To help the department celebrate its 50th anniversary this fall, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the Buffalo History Museum, the Central (downtown) Library, and the Buffalo Museum of Science are all displaying artwork, books, and cultural objects that have undergone conservation treatment as part of the collective exhibition, Fifty Years of Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Western New York.

Buffalo State College President Katherine Conway-Turner recognized the commitment faculty and staff members continue to make in fulfilling the college’s mission, despite the ongoing pandemic and other external challenges, during her 2020 State of the College address, which was delivered virtually this year. President Conway-Turner also emphasized Buffalo State’s longtime commitment to social justice, which is now being enhanced. This includes launching a social justice website, increasing the campus’s connection with external community partners, and assessing how the curriculum can deepen students’ exposure to and understanding of social justice both historically and in its present manifestations.

Election Day is quickly approaching, and the Buffalo State Civic & Community Engagement Office (CCE) has become the epicenter of voting information and resources to help students learn more about their rights and responsibilities as young voters.

Faces of Buffalo State: Robert Warren, Associate Professor of Biology Robert’s research on ants has been featured in renowned science journals and national publications. We checked in with him to see how his research and classes were going this semester. ... For me, teaching and research are two sides of the same coin. Research keeps my teaching up to date. And teaching makes research more fun as the joy of discovery is better when shared in a group. Buffalo State can be a place where research dovetails into teaching, and that is the sweet spot for me. As with everything, the pandemic increases the challenges of research and teaching; yet, these are important endeavors that must continue. By rising to these challenges, we build our flexibility and resilience; these are skills that students can use toward tackling the challenges of the world, and these are skills that faculty can use to avoid complacency and stagnation. And hey, I kind of dig those black Buff State masks. For fun, I like hiking with my wife and dogs, though, as an ecologist, sometimes a hike in the woods is hard to separate from a day in the office. Outdoor photography helps keep me focused on the bugs and plants rather than ecological theory when I am in the woods. Still, many a paper emerged from observations gained during a walk in the woods. My advice for students: excel at the job you have, and you will get the job you want.
