With a sad, cloudy, and wet week, who better to brighten our spirits than Sakari the polar bear! This week on #WillSakariEatIt, we gave him yams! This one even surprised us, because he ate them all no questions asked! We really hope you enjoy these videos and can't wait for a special Halloween edition next week! Thanks for watching!

Sing it with us...."can you feel the love tonight?!" Recently, we paired our female African lion, Lusaka, together with our male lion Tiberius. While there are no guarantees, our animal care team monitored the process and did see successful breeding behavior. Lusaka and Tiberius were paired based on a breeding recommendation from the The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). If successful, it will be the first time in four years the Buffalo Zoo has had lion cubs. In 2016, the Zoo saw the birth of four cubs, Tobias, Asha, Amirah, and Roary. We're crossing our fingers for some "roaring" good news in the future, so stay tuned for updates in the coming months!

We are heartbroken to share that Dallas, the California sea lion, unexpectedly passed away on Sunday night. Our veterinary and animal care teams had been closely monitoring and treating Dallas for a respiratory issue, and he seemed to be improving. Our female sea lions Jesse, Pokey, and Toni, are in good health and are doing fine. Our veterinary team performed a necropsy (the animal version of an autopsy), and the results were inconclusive on the cause of death. We will be se...nding out tissue and other samples to specialized laboratories to learn more about the untimely passing of Dallas. Dallas was 21 years old and came to the Buffalo Zoo in 2005 as part of the debut of the Sea Lion Cove exhibit. Dallas was a big guy weighing in at 765 pounds. He was dad to Toni, born in June 2019. In the wild, California sea lions live 15 to 20 years. In managed care, like the Buffalo Zoo, the trends are longer at 20-30 years due to the exceptional care they receive. No one more than our teams at the Buffalo Zoo knows how devastating this loss is especially after losing Sampson the giraffe just a short time ago. Please know these two sad incidents are in no way related. We are committed to connecting our Buffalo Zoo community to wildlife and wild places, and one way we do so is by bringing you many different scenes from the Zoo -- our shared wins and losses, births and deaths, and highs and lows. In that spirit of community, we ask that as you offer your condolences that you keep the discussion civil and thoughtful out of respect and sensitivity for our teams whose hearts are hurting today.

In a year that most want to forget, there were a few highlights, and #WillSakariEatIt was one of those bright spots. This small form of enrichment that our keepers gave our polar bear, Sakari, allowed him to experience new smells and tastes that he normally would never experience. While he will always prefer his main diet of about 10 to 15 pounds of meat a day, Sakari definitely enjoyed some new foods, while some he decided he'd rather smash. We will be taking a brief break from new segments this year, but we plan to bring new foods for Sakari to try in 2021. We want to thank everyone for watching and we wish you all a happy and safe holiday. Enjoy this highlight reel of the past few months!

While our beloved Buffalo Bills won't be playing Thursday Night Football tonight, we are still bringing you #WillSakariEatIt today!
