It's that time of the year everyone! As we watch the leaves start to turn color, that means the temperature starts to get colder, and then our wood or pellet stoves kick on. We all love our stoves during the fall and winter for the heat and that fire effect it gives off, but do you remember to get your chimneys cleaned? Annually cleaning your chimneys and getting them inspected can guarentee that you'll have a safe heating season without us showing up. ... Over time, burning wood/wood products cause a by-product called cerosote. This substance is highly flammable! Cerosote will build up, starting as flakes. Over time it will become a tar-like substance, and then harden into a solid wax, all of which will choke airflow. Once it is in that solid wax state, it will melt upon heat rising in the chimney, and has a high potential to ignite, causing a chimney fire. Signs of a chimney fire can be an unusually dark colored smoke, embers shooting out of the top of the chimney, smoke coming out of the sides of the chimney due to being clogged, and of course, fire out of the top. Call your local chimney cleaning company to come out and look/inspect/clean. Not only will it save your chimney, it will save you time, and also your house and property!
