We are excited to welcome the newest members of The 1209 Society, Cambridge in America’s legacy society. To honor their generosity by including Collegiate Cambridge in their estate plans, they will soon receive recognition certificates signed by Professor Stephen J. Toope, Vice-Chancellor and Peter Dawson, Chairman of the CAm Board. The certificates are a small token to recognize and reflect our deep appreciation of their philanthropy. To all our members, thank you for your commitment to excellence in higher education and research through your membership. For Women’s History Month, CAm celebrates University of Cambridge women who challenged the status quo in the past and those who are changing the course of history now. Zadie Smith (King's College 1996) is the author of the novels White Teeth, The Autograph Man, On Beauty, NW, and Swing Time, as well as two collections of essays, Changing My Mind and Feel Free. She is recognized for her treatment of race, religion, and cultural identity and for her novels’ eccen...tric characters, savvy humor, and snappy dialogue. Smith began her studies for an English Literature degree at King’s College, Cambridge in 1994. She excelled academically while also performing part-time as a jazz singer. A year into her studies, Smith wrote a story for publication as part of the May Anthologies, an Oxbridge creative writing collection. This entry led to a contract for her first novel, White Teeth, which she completed during her final year at Cambridge. The novel centers around Britain's relationships with people from formerly colonized countries in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. White Teeth was published in 2000 amid critical acclaim. It was praised internationally and won a number of awards, including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, the Whitbread Book Award as best first novel, the Guardian First Book Award, the Commonwealth Writers First Book Prize, and the Betty Trask Award. It has been translated into over twenty languages and was made into a television drama for British Channel 4.
