This short clip of Yo-Yo Ma performing Pablo Casals' "Cant del Ocells"(Song of the Birds) gives us chills! Spanish cellist Casals always started his concerts with this hauntingly beautiful piece since his exile from his native country. 49 years ago he played this piece at the United Nations. This Friday, Oct 23rd, Yo-Yo Ma will be performing a live concert, "A New Equilibrium," at the IDAGIO Global Concert Hall to honor the United Nations' 75th anniversary. "We’re going to as...k what a peaceful, sustainable world looks like 75 years after the UN’s creation." Cant del Ocells can be found in The Casals Legacy, a collection of 10 solo pieces from Pablo Casals' repertoire for cello with piano accompaniment. William Grant Still, often referred to as the "Dean of Afro-American Composers," wrote tone poem "Darker America" to express the triumph of a people over their sorrows through fervent prayer." Making space for himself as a black modernist, Still premiered this synergy of symphonic and jazz languages in 1924, and was met with skepticism as opposed to the acclaim his white counterparts received. In this triumphant work, the exploration of struggle and transformation rises and... falls the strings, a theme of sorrow echoes from the English horn, and hope extend forth from the brass, accompanied by strings and woodwinds. Just as relevant almost 100 years later, please enjoy "Darker America" as performed by ROCO and led by Christopher Rountree, conductor. For more info, visit CarlFischer.com/ETO22

Looking at this vintage photo of the Carl Fischer Concert Hall (circa 1940s-1950s) seems reminiscent of current day. But although the lights have been dimmed on large-scale gatherings such as concerts and recitals, music continues to be a driving force for students and educators who continue to strive for musical excellence. Music is still alive in virtual classrooms, spatially distanced ensembles, and in the daily practice musicians of all ages continue to commit themselves to.

Today we'd like to applaud Mathew Schick, Music Director at Crescenta Valley High School for his hard work and determination to ensure his students receive the music education that they deserve. This wonderful video is a testament to his resilience and love for his students. Being a music educator during this time is a difficult reality and we'd like to extend our gratitude towards teachers who are spending extra hours, putting in extra effort, and going the extra mile to make things work in their virtual or spatially distanced classrooms. Teachers such as Mr. Schick make a difference in their students' lives and their music classrooms provide comfort, stability, and community in otherwise uncertain times.

It’s Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day, a day to celebrate odd, rare, experimental and well, uncommon instruments. Nicknamed "Big Carl," this giant tuba was once displayed in the window of the Carl Fischer store in downtown New York. Its twin La Prodigieuse was on hand at the grand opening of a new store in Boston in 1911. Click each photo to fully appreciate its size. ...... Carl Fischer Music.
