I can remember as a kid always being mesmerized on the fourth of July staring up at the night sky as an explosion of colors and sounds erupted either down town ...over the river or out at a nearby military base. Fireworks are so amazing! As great as any grand finale was, I still always found myself, leaving with the smell of sulfur in my nostrils and the imprint waterfalls of light in my mind, thinking, I wish it hadn’t stopped! There seems to be something in my heart that is sort of all in on life and looking for what is bigger and better, looking for that proverbial happiness of life, a joy that doesn’t end. I can remember as a teenager hearing the idea from someone that the happiness equation works like this: God = Boring, so have fun first and then later in life settle down and do the whole Jesus thing. And sadly, I believed it. I spent years looking for the more that my heart desires and as great as the light shows are that the world can offerit never satiated the deeper longing in me. But joy is not mere happiness. Happiness comes and goes based on my circumstances and mood. Joy though is the fruit of possessing the thing that our heart longs for. And more than anything else, our hearts thirst for love, for the Presence of Love, to be loved. In my own journey, it was through the experience of encountering this Loving Presence that my heart awoke to a joy that honestly I didn’t think was possible. Falling in love is without a doubt one of the most powerful human experiencesbut being caught up in the Eternal Love of God and realizing that YOU are at the center of that Love as the delight of the Father!! Wow! Joy abides even when the world around us seems to conspire against it, because God is with us alwaysmost especially in the Eucharist! So if we long for the fullness of joy, then the only place that we will find it is in the Presence of the fullness of Love Jesus Christ. The beauty of it is that He wants that joy for us as well. When he speaks to His disciples of the love of the Father for them, he says, All this I have told you, that my joy may be in you and your joy may be full! (John 15:11). This joy fills the heart with light and life, it makes us dance and sing! His Presence is a foretaste and preparation for the joy of heaven where there will be no grand finaleonly our hearts saying, I wish I could take it all in! (Written by Br. Malachy, who becomes Fr.
