Training Tip of the Day for June 14, 2012 Adaptability is imitation. It means power of resistance and assimilation. Mahatma Gandhi I raced the Hudson Valley Triathlon Club’s first race of the year last night at Wilson State Park in Mt. Tremper. I have not raced in a few years so I got there early ready to get my gear in order and mentally prepare for race. Having done 11 Ironman races I thought no biggie, it’s a simple sprint race. Well was I wrong. My good friend Pat... Nesbitt’s daughter Ellen and wife Roget were also racing and Pat, who could not attend, called me driving down and told me to give them both some words of encouragement. The race starts at 5:45pm sharp. Roget and Ellen got there and found me at 5:30pm with an easy request, to pump up Ellen’s tires. Upon taking the dust-cap off, her tube blew. I had 11 minutes to change the tire, arrange my gear, get my bib # and get into my wetsuit. I said to myself, its not about the finish, its about the journey, with two awesome women. So I got the tube changed and wheel on around 5:42pm, and headed down to the swim start. I had a great swim, actually seeing my buddy Henry (the 16 time Ironman nut who finished the HITS Hunter iron-distance race Sunday on zero training in two years). I thought, go out and hammer the bike and see how the chips fall. Another voice inside said, its not about the finish, its about the journey, with two awesome women. So I waited for Ellen to finish the swim. We went out on the bike course chatting away and figuring out our strategy to win the race! We ended up taking a wrong turn and went off-course. We did end up riding the same distance as the other racers, 12 miles, but had to complete a KOM climb which was extremely steep for me, let alone a 17yo girl who has never really done a triathlon. I told Ellen, to visualize her climbing the road and her legs continuing to turn over. I said to her that a Nesbitt never quits and you won’t quit today. She smiled her bright smile and fought through the pain and having never stopped pedaling (or having to switch back) and hammered the road like Lance Armstrong in the Alpe d'Huez. We finished the ride with big grins and waited for mom Roget to finish her bike course. Then Ellen, Roget and me took out to run and have the best run our bodies would permit. We all ran together and traded stories about our respective bike course happenings until Ellen decided to see how fast she could finish. Ellen and I ended up crossing the finish line together with Roget a few steps behind. All with great big smiles on our faces and a pledge to make sure that we would make the real righ right turn next time. Moral of this story is to keep your mind open to change, adapt the best you can, and always smile! Peace out. Donald. See more

Triathlon Tip of the Day. Go short before going long. The Ironman World Championship event is arguably the most recognizable triathlon event in the world. The award-winning NBC broadcast of this event has brought the struggle and triumph of triathlon to living rooms around the world. However, a 140.6-mile event2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of cycling and 26.2 miles of runningis more than nearly all first-time triathletes should attempt on the first outing in the sport. B...egin with a shorter sprint-distance event (400 to 500 yards of swimming, 11 to 15 miles of cycling and around 3.1 miles of running) or an Olympic-distance event (0.9 miles of swimming, 24.8 miles of cycling and 6.2 miles of running). Sometimes its hard taking ones own advice. I, for instance, am getting back into triathlon after a break. I have done 11 Ironman’s. But I keep having the tendency to want to go out and ride 100 miles climbing Platte Clove Road, etc. instead of focusing on getting 20-25 miles of good form riding with some interval work.
