Leave your leaves on your lawn! As leaves are changing colors and dropping from trees, it can be tempting to spend time and money removing them from your lawn. However, leaving them on the lawn or keeping them nearby is a more environmentally-friendly option. Leaves have nutrients that are beneficial for soil! If you're looking for other options for your leaves, try 1. Mulching your leaves in place... 2. Adding shredded leaves to your garden 3. Saving your leaves for your compost For more on alternative options for leaves, visit: www.dec.ny.gov/public/46613.html *Reminder: It's illegal to burn leaves anywhere in NYS!

Did you miss our Stewardship in Skaneateles program? Good news! You can view the recording, which is posted on the Skaneateles Lake website (scroll down for the video): www.skanlakeinfo.org/protected-parcels One of the presentations focused on conservation easements - a voluntary, legal agreement that is held between a landowner and a government agency/land trust, with the landowner maintaining ownership. Easements are entered to protect land's natural resources by restricting future development/land use, and many allow some sort of public access for recreation. Read more on the DEC's website: www.dec.ny.gov/lands/41156.html or check out the first presentation in the recording linked above!

Whether you are counting down the days until pumpkin picking, or are holding onto summer-it can be difficult to stay comfortable at home as the seasons shift and temperatures fluctuate. Did you know you can utilize your windows as energy savers! 1. Close windows and lower shades on hot, sunny days. (in most cases, this is more efficient in savings than using natural light and needing to cool the room)... 2. Raise shades and open windows after dark to let in cool evening air. (This strategy can result in indoor temps 20 degrees lower than outside.) 3. Open windows on opposite sides of the house and turn on fans to maximize cross breezes. Face a fan outside to suck hot air from the house and face another fan inside to draw in cooler air. Stay tuned for more tips tomorrow as we take on appliances and 'the phantom charge'! #smartenergychoices #energyefficiency #staycool #savemoney Tips credited to NYSERDA
