Meet the prehensile-tailed skink that was recently born at the zoo! Skinks are native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Macaroni penguins joined Central Park Zoo's thriving Antarctic penguin colony in 2017. This is a picture of "Marinara", the first macaroni chick hatched at the zoo in June to parents Gnocchi and Alfredo. Macaroni penguins are listed as Vulnerable due to the impacts of marine pollution, commercial fishing, and climate change on their food supply. Here's Marinara, more grown up and fully integrated into our colony of king, gentoo, chinstrap and macaroni penguins. Marinara is still growing; her characteristic orange and yellow crest won't be fully developed until she is 3-4 years old. Marinara and our other penguins are engaging ambassadors for the fascinating world of the Antarctic region and the importance of its conservation.
