Friday Faces of Challenge!! Meet Dominique! Dominique has worked at Challenge for about a year. He had heard that Challenge had programs to help people find job...s. So he came in looking for a job and our Contract Production Manager hired him on the spot as a custodial worker. During his shift it was necessary for him to interact with our participants. Our Pre-vocational Manager Briggs was very impressed with Dominique and the relationships he developed with the folks working in the Contract Production area; so impressed in fact that withing months when a position opened up Dominique was promoted to Training Specialist. Now he excels at helping participants develop skills needed to find jobs. It's not surprising that Dominique's favorite part of working at Challenge is the people. He wants people to know that Challenge offers a lot of opportunities that can not only lead to a job but also a career. Outside of work Dominique likes to play b-ball. He also spends a lot of time helping take care of his nephews. His favorite quote is: "Two roads diverge into an open wood and I took the one less traveled." Thank you Dominique! You are definitely a positive addition to the Challenge family! See more

Rising to the Challenge! by Ryan N. Meet Robin B.!! A lesson is only as meaningful as the intent behind it. A teacher’s impact is dependent on their delivery of... the message and the outcome they hope to fully realize. In all reality, it is the student that holds the tools to implement the knowledge they’ve learned and the success of one student can inspire many learners to follow this path to greatness. Robin Broadbent was a 2013-14 graduate of the inaugural IHS/Challenge Job Readiness Class in which he was enrolled to complete the CDOS credential, a requirement for graduation. Robin was an active member of this first pilot classroom and his contributions were an integral part of this programs success. Robin spoke up; asked questions that debated the reasoning behind lessons taught and found himself better off for doing so. To challenge the norms we abide by, perhaps even considered to be antiquated thinking, can raise eye brows and ruffle feathers. In this class however, Robin was given the freedom to be inquisitive and through this opportunity he was able to accrue experience in the creation of a cover letter, resume, application practice, job exploration and lastly a successful mock interview. After finishing his coursework and graduating in the spring of 2015 Robin was able to land a position within Ithaca Colleges dish rooms in collaboration with Challenge. Throughout 2015-16 Robin was engaged in this Challenge run business and learned the skills necessary to perform each job duty within this setting. Robin was so successful that he was offered hours in the dish rooms over the 2016 summer break to ensure that these skills weren’t lost while the students were home on vacation. Only a select few exceptional employees are offered these limited summer hours and this is a testament to Robin’s hard work and his dedication to growing as an employee with Challenge. Robin’s success in this program is the perfect example for students at Ithaca High School who are engaged in this Job Readiness Curriculum. Robin applied what he had learned, in turn Robin, Ithaca High School and Challenge mutually benefited from this meaningful program. His success will only further motivate the students that remember Robin and his experience will elevate the focus of his former classmates in wanting to feel the same accomplishment Robin’s attained as a working member of our community. GREAT Job Robin!! See more
