The support we have received from all of you has been amazing and we are deeply grateful. 2. Although we may not have control over events going on around us, we do have control over how we respond. Do you remember Allen's Donut and Sandwich Shop? Even if you don't, just looking at the images of the mouth-watering waffles and pancakes and perusing the menu will transport you to another place and time. This great menu is one of many interesting gifts that have been donated to the museum over the past ten years. In case you can't make it in to check out our exhibit "Recent Gifts: 2011-2020", join our Director Tim Weidner for a virtual gallery tour and talk! The event is Tuesday, December 29, at 6:30 pm. Please find the Zoom link on our website, along with further information about the exhibit and upcoming events. This is a FREE event!

EXCITING NEWS!!!! The Chapman Museum has partnered with the Sustainable Food Project at SUNY Adirondack in a joint study. The Historic Apples Project is an initiative to raise awareness and interest in heritage varieties of apples that were cultivated locally during the 19th and 20th centuries. Our short term goal is to identify, map, and preserve trees that still exist in area communities (including Warren County and possibly parts of neighboring Washington County). The ...long term goal is to provide for the continuation of these historic lines by obtaining samples from existing trees and eventually producing new trees and offering them for sale. If you have apple trees on your property or know of the locations of trees, and would like to be a part of this very unique and important project, please contact us! Or, perhaps you have heard stories of local apple picking or orchards passed down through the family. This knowledge is helpful to us, as well! Help us get this project off the ground. We're counting on you to spread the word and keep this sweet legacy alive! Simply respond to this post or send an email to [email protected] Photo: Seneca Ray Stoddard (CHM 1977.218.4049) #applepicking #heritageapples #heritagevarieties #localproduce #senecaraystoddard#stoddardphotographs #localhistory

There was a time when our backyards were orchards. Our pies were made with Strawberry apples, our cider made with Russets, a bowl of Maiden's Blushes and Winter Bananas were the centerpiece of the table, and a glass of "switchel" topped off dinner. What's all this about? Find out how this fruit once made life in Queensbury a whole lot sweeter in our new website blogpost! We'll take a look at the history of our orchard-full past in this celebration of fall! And please, i...f you are aware of any old apple trees on your property, we'd love to add more the story so let us know! See more

Well, the kids are back to school after what seems like an eternity. We recently were browsing some old scrapbooks in our collection and thought maybe you all would appreciate what life looked like back in the fall of 1949 at the Broad Street School. Here we have a first grade science lesson in progress. Can anyone guess what they are learning about? Today's kids wouldn't have clue! A round of applause to whoever can come up with the best caption! Let's hear what you've got!

September 11. Words are just not adequate. Perhaps an object that was there that day and witnessed what occurred can make that connection much more effectively. If you stop by the Ridge St. Firehouse and walk along the side of the building, you will find a piece of steel beam recovered from one of the World Trade Center Towers, courtesy of the Port Authority of NY/NJ. That artifact can say so much more than I can. #September11 #september112001 #twintowers #Worldtradecentermemorial #steelbeam #9/11 #OurHistoryMatters

Calling all film buffs, piano lovers, 1920's fans, local museum supporters! There's just one more day to purchase your tickets for this very cool, very unique event. It's the 1924 silent film "The Marriage Circle" with live music accompaniment by Ben Model and a very brief and very interesting introduction to the early cinemas in Glens Falls by museum curator Jillian Mulder, presented virtually by our partner, The Park Theater! And here is a fun fact about this movie... on...e of the leading actresses was 1920's film star Esther Ralston. Ms. Ralston lived in Queensbury during the 1970's! What's not to like? Sit on the sofa, do your best Gatsby impressions, mix up a couple of Manhattans, and fire up the laptop. Best of all, a portion of the ticket sales goes to help support the Chapman! Win, win, win! Oh, and by the way...it's a comedy . Go to www.parktheatergf.com for the details.

Hope everyone's Thursday is going well. I know you've all been wondering the answer to yesterday's #WhereIsItWednesday feature. So, without further ado... It's the former C. V. Peter's Store on Glen St., now the home of Finders Keepers. From the early to mid 20th century, business owners considered all surfaces fair game for advertising. The store entranceway was a popular place to display the business name. It was most often done in tiles like mosaic work or in crushed and sealed stone (called terrazzo). This entrance area is known as an "apron". To my knowledge, there is only one other place in Glens Falls that has a name in mosaic tile apron. Bonus points and a huge high-five if anyone knows where I'm talking about!!! (It is currently hidden under a mat.)
