In upstate NY it might be a good idea to protect young newly planted Lilacs with a simple open cover, shielding them from heavy snow or falling ice. Lilacs love the cold however, and actually need the long cold rest period of winter. I don’t cover the many Lilacs we have over winter in pots. Hi Lilac Lovers, if you purchased a lilac from us and you haven’t planted it yet... you can still plant it now before the ground freezes. You may need to protect it from heavy snow and ice, if it’s still small. They will need to go dormant and rest for a few months, so will naturally lose their leaves.
