Sermon Snip: The Baptism of Our Lord Mark 1 The Epiphany is always January 6 for which the gospel reading is from Matthew 2, the account of the magi searching for, and finding, the Christ child. Also celebrated as part of the Epiphany is the Baptism of Our Lord which was observed Sunday, January 10. ... As Jesus is baptized by John (Mark 1), God tears open the sky and proclaims Jesus as God's beloved son. Thank goodness this year we are encountered with these events of Christ's life. With so much negativity in society, with the pandemic still serious, the fact remains that God still wants us to have our own epiphanies. One is that, as the magi found Christ, Christ finds us! Jesus searches us out when we drift away and wants us to be near him. That's the promise of God, that Jesus will be present with us always. The other comfort is that God is clear -- Jesus is his son. We therefore have a clear someone to follow, the God-human, his son. In our own baptisms we learn how to follow Jesus: by living among God's people, and by working for justice and peace. With a week like we had, peace sounds very good, doesn't it? Ernst Moss
