Dear patients, In an effort to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, our office will be closed until 5/30/2020. We want you to know that your health and safety is always our #1 priority. As we have noted before, it is nearly impossible to provide a truly reliable date on when we would be able to return to our normal office hours as the circumstances are still rapidly changing. Please know that we are still able to communicate with all of our patients via phone/ email and... do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. We all must do our part to stop the spread of this virus and try our best to reduce the load on all of the hospitals and healthcare professionals that are working tirelessly to help those that are in need. We thank you for your understanding. Please be healthy. Stay safe Pediatric dentistry of New York

Why does a 5 year old need to have X-rays? A lot of parents tell me they are worried and don’t want to take X-rays. Everything looks fine and there is no pain or We brush every day and don’t eat candy. Mostly the fear comes from misinformation. Many people have heard about the effects of radiation and are rightfully concerned for their kids. But the current digital X-ray system and ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principles used make the amount of radiation i...n one dental X-ray equal to - eating 2 - 50 times less than normal daily background radiation - 200 times less than a flight from NY to LA . The AAPD recommends starting to take X-rays if the child has teeth with closed contacts(close together where you need to floss to get through) because there can be hidden cavities in between the teeth. Looking at this picture is a great example where the teeth are close together, but look like there is no cavity at all. So I was surprised to see what was really inside! Swipe to see the X-ray. The black is outlining the pulp(where the nerve of the tooth is) and the red outlines the cavity. Her had a cavity reaching to the nerve of the tooth and could not be detected without an X-ray. So what is the best thing to do? Using ALARA we image gently as intervals based on the risk of the child..higher risk children will need X-rays around every 6 months, while lower risk children may wait about 12 months depending on the health of the mouth we see during the 6 month checkup. Thyroids collar to protect sensitive areas in children are a must! Using lower dosage for children, and digital speed will reduce the dosage further. As always we try to keep our children healthy as possible in their mouth and body! Stay safe and healthy everyone.
