Happy Hour with @donnyrub and the SAMBP

CLIMB 12.12.2020

The leaves are gone now and bad weather coming next week. Get your rides in on Sunday. Calverton, Overton, Manorville, Edgewood and Bethpage would be well drained. Speaking of Calverton there is a group ride there at 9am. Social distancing and mask protocols required as well as a helmet and eye protection. Photo by Tom Bass.

Bridge freezes before trail does. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped us build this bridge over troubled waters at Cunningham Park. This should fix that area that was constantly wet and mushy. We cleared lots of drains and diverted the rainfall off the trail. Those logs are locust and we took the bark off so it will last a long time. Let’s see how this works. #trailwork

Thanks to John Luca for helping with trail work at Stillwell Woods. Also thanks to the random riders that stopped to help out. We rebuilt the berm at the bottom of uh oh and added a water bar drain at the bottom with a nice Locust log that you can launch or roll. We also added more signs to help newbies navigate the trails. By the way if you want to avoid the uh oh section, just make a right at the green circle marker and your second left will bring you to the green loop. Additionally we removed some rebar that was sticking up out of the ground by the bamboo climb and we fixed a few spots in the snake pit. We will be doing more berm work and other enhancements so stay tuned. #ridetheisland #getdirty #stillwellwoods #stillwellwoodspark #climbonline #donatemoneyormuscle #longislandmountainbiking

We pick out 13 lucky winners for a @clifbar swag bag. You gotta be in it to win it but we are all winners with well maintained trails. This Sunday October 25 the Glacier Ridge Ride-B-Q is happening. Ride starts at 10am then BBQ around 1pm. If beginners need a guide ask for Cary for a main loop ride of about 4 miles. Stay 6 feet away and have a mask if you get closer. Rain cancels. Photo by Cary Stevens.

SUFFOLK COUNTY BIKE HIKE MASTER PLAN UPDATE: Following our 5th HB-TAC meeting in mid-January, the Suffolk County Hike and Bike Master Plan and Report were finalized in late March 2020. Unfortunately, we missed the chance to update you back then. Please check the Connect Long Island website - www.connectli.org - for the final documents. You can find it under reports section (https://www.connectli.org/reports.html). In other recent bike-related news, we are working on a plan ...to advance select projects from the Hike and Bike Master Plan to Conceptual Design. We also recently accepted a donation of seven to ten bicycle repair stations from the LI Board of Realtors and are aiming to have them installed in locations around Suffolk County by the spring. Finally, in September we were thrilled to re-launch our bike share program, Bethpage Ride, with new Southampton-based operators Pedal Share. Bikes can be accessed via the Bloom bike share app in Patchogue, Babylon, Hampton Bays and Southampton Village. Thank you again for all your time, input, and support on this initiative. This will be instrumental in expanding active transportation choices and improving the quality of life within Suffolk County. It was wonderful working with you all and we look forward to a continuing collaborative and successful partnership moving forward. Why do we build so many berms? Because berms make us smile! Your membership helps us create more smiles per mile! Thanks to Ben Tiu for the photo. #donatemoneyormuscle #gottadigtoride #cunninghambikepark #optoutside #enjoyoutdoors #bermsfordays

We’re installing new directional signage at Stillwell Woods and added some wrong way signs to keep everyone on the right track. If you’re a regular rider there you may not notice them but we hope it will keep the newbies moving in the right direction.

This trail is closed to prevent erosion and hopefully the plants will grow back. Trail runners and newbie mountain bikers opened it up. We also closed off a few others. You won’t miss anything, the existing trail is a much better experience.

Not all trail work is glamorous. Here we spent several hours closing off shortcuts and steep side hill trail running routes that cause erosion and threaten the collapse of our trail. This particular location is at Stillwell Woods on the Locomotive Breath Trail. When we create agreements to build and maintain trails we also agree to preserve the land and prevent trampling of plants alongside the trail. We wouldn’t get permission to build more trails if we are not trustworthy in helping conserve our preserves. Please help us out by staying on the designated trails and if you see someone damaging native plants say something. Thanks to John Luca for the help.
