Join Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance for a FREE 9-video series of inspirational videos centered around Black, Indigenous, people of color in collaboration with artists from the Uptown community. Black, Indigenous and People of Color, as well as allies committed to dismantling white supremacy in themselves, their work and the world who are performers and artists are all welcome! ABOUT THE SERIES: In this series we use the breath, stillness and movement exploration as tools fo...r artists and performers to access their creativity. The word inspiration literally means the drawing in of breath! As artists, this is our call to action! To be filled with so much inspiration that our art moves us and others towards change. Tanya Birl-Torres of SoHumanity and teacher at Bread and Yoga, will lead each video, pairing movement, breath work and space for contemplation with the works of uptown visual and musical artists as a means to ground, inspire and celebrate our community. As we process the triple pandemic of COVID-19, systemic racism and climate change, we will use this platform as an opportunity to create space for artists to process the effects of these turbulent times and to liberate their artistic voice. The videos will be released in 3 themes, 1 per week starting November 8th! There will be a 5-minute, 15-minute, and 30-minute videos for each week. You’ll be able to access the links to the videos at the bottom of this post as we release them. DATES AND THEMES: Week One (Nov. 8): Vulnerability as Strength Week Two (Nov. 15): Power in Joy Week Three (Nov. 22): Love as Sacred Activism LIVE Event: December 1st at 7:30pm https://www.nomaanyc.org/2020/10/we-can-breathe/

We are excited to announce our second gala honoree! Melba Wilson Chef, Restaurateur & Author Melba Wilson was born, bred and buttered in Harlem. Today she proudly represents her New York neighborhood as one of the most successful African-American women in the restaurant and catering businesses. Her achievements are countless and her reputation in the food service industry is stellar. Her style, poise and love of entertaining have made Melba’s Restaurant a New York landmark ...frequented by music, TV and movie stars, New York City’s elite, locals and travelers from around the world. Melba’s drive to succeed started at an early age with a sharp eye and impeccable insight. Her first opportunity to learn about the restaurant business was at Harlem’s famous Sylvia's Restaurant, where she held a variety of service and managerial positions. It was Melba who conceptualized and launched the popular Sunday Gospel Brunch, which was so successful that the restaurant industry’s elite quickly came calling. Michael Lomanco, former Executive Chef of 21 Club and Executive Chef of Windows on the World Restaurants contacted Melba in 1999 to produce and manage a weekly Sunday brunch. In less than six months the Champagne Gospel Brunch generated a sixty-five percent increase in revenue. This experience combined with her ability to organize, produce and execute promotional events led to partnerships with some of the most renowned restaurateurs and some of New York City's most signature eateries. In 2004, Melba decided to strike out on her own. Today she is the proud, sole owner of three Harlem based businesses: Melba's restaurant Melba’s Restaurant, Melba’s Catering and Melba's Mussels. Melba’s has won rave reviews from the best of New York City's press. The restaurant and its famous recipes has been featured on a myriad of 'Best Of' lists. Melba’s Catering has an extensive list of clientele including Target, American Express, The Zac Brown Band, Katy Perry and more. Melba can frequently be seen on the national news, cooking shows and many prominent daytime television programs. Melba is the author of Melba's American Comfort: 10 Recipes from My Heart To Your Kitchen, published by Simon & Schuster Register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cloth-2020-gala-tickets-122914 Design by: Kathryn Allison
