Join me in thanking the heroic emergency responders from 22 local fire departments, 6 EMS agencies and 7 support agencies who left their beds early this morning... to brave the cold, crossing the Great South Bay to fight the most disastrous fire that Fire Island has seen in over a decade. The inferno destroyed the iconic Grove Hotel and three residential homes and caused damage to a number of other structures. As great of a loss as this was, if not for the efforts of the hundreds of men and women who responded to the call, the devastation would have been far more widespread. It is a miracle only three first responders had minor injuries and there was no loss of life during the fire. Thank you to Cherry Grove Fire Department’s First Assistant Chief Craig Williams for his leadership; Ken Stein, owner of the Sayville Ferry Service, for personally shuttling firefighters to the island; Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services; the Suffolk County Police Department’s Arson Squad; the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office; and the Town of Brookhaven for their support and efforts during this emergency. Suffolk County is committed to working with the towns and villages to help restore what was lost today on Fire Island. My thoughts and prayers go out to the injured first responders and the families whose homes were lost in the blaze.
