Brandon Martinez Gonzalez '16CC, who grew up in Texas as an undocumented Mexican immigrant, was denied US residency after is acceptance to Columbia College. Thanks to the support from the University and the Columbia Alumni Association of San Antonio, he felt the power of the Columbia community before he set foot on campus. The Columbia alumni club in San Antonio, Brandon's hometown, found out about his problem at the border. They called him to check in, and the club’s support moved Brandon. I wasn’t even a student yet. Today marks the 80th anniversary of WKCR-FM's first radio broadcast. Back in 1941, the station was known as CURC, for Columbia University Radio Club.
