Preparing for brain surgery and the possible subsequent oncology treatment can be emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially draining. We are proud to share the Lighten Your Load program, a patient-to-patient kindness initiative, founded by a current Columbia Neurological Surgery Family. Lighten Your Load provides additional support and strength during a critical moment in the patient’s journey. Learn more about the Lighten Your Load program: https://www.lightenyourloadinitiative.com/ The current fundraising efforts have yielded impressive reserves, and the program will launch with patients imminently. MUST READ When Joan Iodaci woke up three weeks ago, she immediately knew something was wrong. Having suffered a minor headache the day prior, Joan‘s right eyelid now began to droop significantly. She called her daughter Gaby Tosto-D’Antonio, an endovascular nurse practitioner at Columbia Neurosurgery, who immediately rushed her to the nearby ER. A CT revealed an anterior communicating artery #aneurysm and she was immediately transferred to Columbia for care. Gaby noted, I... knew that I wanted my mom to be treated at Columbia; not because I worked here, but because I wanted the best aneurysm specialists taking care of my mom. Upon arrival, Dr. Sean Lavine, endovascular neurosurgeon, performed a cerebral angiogram. And later that week, the department chair, Dr. Sander Connolly performed a craniotomy with aneurysm clipping. All went well and Joan is now back to her normal routine. I never thought I’d bring my mom to work one day, said Gaby. I knew she was in the best hands getting this aneurysm treated, including my own! Pictured here is Gaby providing incisional care and staple removal for mom, Joan. #aneurysmawareness

Each year, more than 600 neurosurgeons from across the United States and Canada come together in Central Park for the annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament, organized by Columbia Neurosurgery. This year, due to the unexpected circumstances, there is no tournament, but we can all raise awareness for brain tumor research and education. We can't wait for the next tournament! Until then, be safe and stay well. The purpose of the annual Neurosurgery Softball Tournament is to raise money for the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation, which was set up by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) to support research and education efforts that enhance and confirm the critical role neurosurgeons play in improving lives. #teamworkmakesthedreamwork

It’s that time of year once again when our chief residents graduate and move onto the next chapter of their medical careers. Congrats to Drs. Hannah Goldstein and Nikita Alexiades on completing their neurosurgery training at Columbia! Dr. Goldstein will pursue a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital and Dr. Alexaides will start his journey in pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at University of Utah. We wish them the best of luck! Swipe to see a throwback of our chiefs! @seattlechildrens @uofuhealth #neurosurgeryresident #graduates #pediatricneurosurgery @ Neurological Institute of New York
