VP&S researchers have created a new technology using synthetic llama antibodies to protect endangered proteins inside cells. The technology could treat dozens of diseases. In the case of one of the cystic fibrosis proteins we tested, we get a remarkable rescue, restoring protein levels in the cell membrane to about 50% of normal, says Henry Colecraft, PhD, the John C. Dalton Professor of Physiology & Cellular Biophysics, who led the research. If that happened in a patient, it would be transformative. Read more: https://columbiamed.link/39MkOXn

Complex carbohydrates provide a more stable blood sugar level, says Dr. St-Onge. So if blood sugar levels are more stable at night, that could be the reason complex carbohydrates are associated with better sleep. Read more via The New York Times: https://columbiamed.link/3rabbbm

Evelyn Berger-Jenkins, MD, assistant prof. of pediatrics at #ColumbiaVPS, has co-authored new recommendations to help pediatricians address emotional and behavioral health issues in children during the #COVID19 pandemic. "We recommend that pediatricians start to screen for emotional and behavioral problems if they don’t already do so," says Dr. Berger-Jenkins. "This should be combined with screening for social determinants of health, such as food security and family functioning, given the inextricable links between social and emotional health." New data from Columbia and other #ECMO centers throughout the world show that more than 60% of severe #COVID19 patients who receive ECMO, a heart-lung life support machine, survive. The results of this large-scale international registry study, while hardly definitive evidence, provide a real-world understanding of the potential for ECMO to save lives in a highly select population of COVID-19 patients, says senior author Daniel Brodie, MD, professor of medicine at #ColumbiaVPS and director of the Adult ECMO Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
