Taking the Maid of the Mist to see Niagara Falls from belowand getting wet in the processis a longtime tourist tradition. Now, the Maid of the Mist operation has gone green. The iconic boat tour, which has been running since 1846, launched two new all-electric, zero-emission catamarans to cruise along the Niagara River and up to the falls. It’s part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s initiative to cut New York state’s greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent by the year 2050. The New... York Power Authority will provide renewable hydropower for the vessels. There is an additional upside for the tourists, too: virtually no engine noise. The quieter ride should allow visitors to hear the roar of the Falls more than ever. One of the boats will be named for Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-born engineer who designed and constructed the world’s first hydro-electric power plant at Niagara Falls.
